What has happened to the quality of British television?

There hasn't been much in the way of quality british television for a while now which is why i rarely watch TV. Decided to give Ugly Betty a try tonight though and surprisingly it seems quite good (although the first episode is like The Devil Wears Prada squeezed into an hours worth of telly). :)

The BBC has had some great dramas recently, Life on Mars, Hustle, Spooks as well as things like Murphy's law. Bit bare at the moment though :( ITV is a waste of time. They seem to make even decent sounding programs rubbish.

Moreover, whats happened to all the great comedy programmes we used to see.

Nowadays, I have NTL with UKTV Gold so I can watch some half decent shows.

Totally agree though - wtf is going on with our license money?

We need more things like Only Fools and Horses on BBC1 more often. Instead they stick them on UK TV Gold and all that jazz!!

meh :(

I think we need more shows on BBC1, and bbc2 should be repeats and documentary's like it used to be.

Having had TiVo for years it's very rare that we actually watch "live" tv. With 250Gb drive in there we had around 100 programs in there that we wanted to watch over xmas and it was just over 50% full!

Intelligent PVR's are the future. TiVo is by far the most complete product in terms of software and UI even though they stopped selling them a few years ago. There is a thriving community and boxes still sell very very well on ebay!

Watch what you want to watch, when you want to watch it!

thats true mind. Build up a masshoof library of videos and who needs to watch 'live' TV.

Roll on BBC launching the downloadable series.

I was lucky enough to be part of their iMP service for about 4 month. That was fantastic!! The ability to come home and watch a program that had just been on 1 hour before. :)

Even watching Top Gear repeated on the Sky channels is much better than watching the standard terrestrial channels these days. I'd go out of my mind if i didn't have Sky.

Has a law changed recently or something? You used to turn the TV on late at night and see a repeat from earlier or some random film, and now there's these awful unwinnable phone in quizzes everywhere I look.

big brother and phone-in 'quiz' shows, thats what happened to the quality, spawning endless format repeats and and irripressible hoard of 'reality' bilge, which seems to be feverishly swallowed up by the ignorant masses

The BBC seem to have gone on an overdrive of 'reality-phone-in-shows' like X-Factor, except the BBC versions (Strictly, Two of Us, etc) are incredibly pretentious and dire.

The license fee doesn't justify itself with the occasional decent program.

same here, i watch ukgold2 for top gear all the time.

Always rubbish now really. 24 starts tomorrow night, but im working, other than that the only thing i loook forward to is Top Gear.

Luckily I work in a rental shop, so its kinda like having you own DVD collection :)

360>PC>TV

I enjoy watching Eastenders and Big Brother - maybe X-Factor if I'm feeling suicidal and bored.

whatever the argument concerning TV, the definitive reply is always the same.
if you don't like it, change the channel.
at any given moment at any point on any day i can always find at least two programmes that i'd like to watch that are on simultaneously.
