What is a cheap step up from a 4870

As title, dont want to go nuts but what is a nice step up from the 256Mb version? Not interested in cross fire either.

You after something quiet?
performance?
bang for buck?

need to be a little more specific about your personal needs also whats a definate max buget you could not go over

They didn't make a 256mb version? Either you mean 512mb or you have the wrong card. I think the last ATI gaming card with 256mb was the 3850

Exactly. There is no cheap step up from a 4870. Not a worth while one. Just wait a while, save up, see how things roll.

4870 is already a good cheap card. Buying anything else in the cheaper bracket would just be a step sideways.

Agreed, if you do indeed have a 4870 then unless you crossfire, something you have said you don't want to do, then there aren't really any cheap improvements on what is already a good card. Just sit tight, hopefully prices will drop a little soon.

Its a 512 yeah i didn't realise, its defo a 4870 i have the box in front of me, i would say 150 quid would be max and i wouldn't want a hoover type noise really as this one is already quite loud.

^ beat me to it! :)

Save up another few quid. The 5850 cards are coming back down in price. When they are around £200 that's your upgrade.

The only cards that can be had for around £150 are not fast enough to be a worth while upgrade to the 4870.

only thing I can think off is HD5770, HD4890, HD5850 in that order (closest performance on the left to the HD4870)

yeah, but the first two cost too much for marginal increases and the last is out of his current budget

Exactly. I'd say stick until you can get a 58xx. Tbh I'm not sure about nv cards, a second hand 280 might be an option, but I think this too is not much of an upgrade
