Miniskirts which are so short that passersby feel embarrassed just to see them are hitting the street in Korea in the spring season of 2006. They are not just mini. They are super-miniskirts with their total length less than 25 cm. Such super-miniskirts, which got some 10 cm shorter from 10 years ago, are selling like hot cakes, some 2,500-3,000 units on average a day in G-Market, a local online shopping mall, and Auction, the trading site. They account for some 30 percent of women’s clothes sold. “Miniskirts have been here all the time, but this year it seems they reached the point where they can’t get any shorter,” a buyer of women’s clothes at Hyundai Department Store said. “Just several years ago, only those with long, beautiful legs wore such miniskirts, but these days they have become so popular that almost everyone wears them.”
The rage for super-miniskirts is led by young women in their late teens and early 20s. “Some 70 percent of buyers are in their late teens or early 20s,” says Park Jung-won, a deputy manager with Auction who is in charge of clothes. “This spring, school-look miniskirts, which look cute with frills or pleats, are especially popular.” Knee socks and leggings which often go together with miniskirts are also enjoying increasing demand.

Why are super-miniskirts so popular? There are a variety of socio-economic explanations. As the economy slips into deeper recession, miniskirts become increasingly popular, some say. When skirts get shorter, stock prices rise, say others. Gong Min-kyung (26), a woman wearing a super miniskirt in Yeoksamdong, Seoul on Friday said it is just for their satisfaction. A college student said, “When I wear a super-miniskirt, mesh stockings and 7-cm heels, it creates an optical illusion to make me look more than 10 cm taller than I really am.”

“In a situation where the nation’s share prices and the number of people living in poverty increase at the same time, the popularity of super-miniskirts has little to do with the economic situation and more to do with celebrities who wear such short skirts and appear on TV,” says Prof. Lee Yun-jung of Gyeongin National University of Education. The time when the Dongdaemun Market and online shopping malls overflow with super-miniskirts and hot pants coincides with a time when female stars like Lee Hyo-lee, Ko So-young and Kim Tae-hee appear in front of the public wearing such garments.

There was a <25cm outbreak of super-miniskirts a couple of years ago. According to the paper.

Thing is, they're great on slim girls with good legs, but a lot of the time I'd rather not see whats on offer :p Less is more so they say.

Than 25cm? Where do you live? and sure seeing a few a day is one thing...but when they account for 30% of all female buys..its a lot of girls :o

tit monday happened about two weeks ago in cardiff (when the fit girls decide its now too hot to wear fleecy jumpers and your colleages become stunners overnight!)

ah but ive lived in the UK for 25 years and the amount of times ive seen skirts like that, on real girls, cant number more than half a dozen..

Its the pure numbers involved that make this great :o

Oh i'm not saying that these are british, im saying these are shorter direct girls to these.
You'd never find ultra minis catching on in Scotland...shame about that i love seeing girl shivering outside clubs:p
 
Well, skirt so short is a double edged sword. It may look nice on some girls, but not as well on others. The ones posted are either models or the prettier ones. Don't expect everyone in South Korea to look like that ;)

@Gilly: This is actually an interesting point. I have the impression that non-asian guys different criteria than an asian guy when looking at Asian girls. Granted, there are exceptions, some celebs just have a fairly universal appeal, but when it comes to everyday folks, there seem to be slightly discrepancies ;)
