As per the title really. What would you recommend? I am not keen on the cheaper ultrawides due to all the issues they seem to have.

Am guessing one the best out the cheapish 34" widescreens that only cost up to £1000 is the Alienware AW3420DW
(Note it G-Sync)

Hope the black levels on it are much better then what they are on my 34" PG38Q which makes dark games like metro Exodus look crap

As said, LG 34GN850 and the Alienware AW3420DW

The LG is the better monitor but the Alienware is currently reduced in price and it's drop dead gorgeous. If refresh rate is critical to you then the LG is faster. 144Hz rather than the Alienware 120Hz. The Alienware carries the zero dead pixel guarantee where as the LG does not. The Alienware is a slightly older design hence the price reduction and slightly inferior tech spec. It's only 1 year old though so not by any means dated.

I believe the black levels on both the LG 34GN850 and the Alienware AW3420DW are not great.

I have the AW3420DW and it's an utterly fantastic and gorgeous monitor. Less than a year old. Went with it over the LG because of the better customer service and warranty from Dell in case of any issues or needing to play the panel lottery. I got lucky though and was happy with the first one I received. I'm only upgrading now to an LG 48CX OLED because JL are offering burn in warranty for 5 years (otherwise I would have got it from the start) as it's my endgame display. But you'll be very very happy with the Alienware.

I've been looking at these.

Along with others comments, It's worth noting the LG has HDR while the Alienware doesn't, however the Alienware has better I/O if you use plenty of USB ports on the screen.

Thanks guys for your recommendations. Whilst looking on Dell's website at the AW3420DW (which you can get for £809.90 at the moment using the code DELLMONER11 plus 6% cashback using topcashback for today only) I came across the S3220DGF for only £313.09 using the code DELLMONER11 plus the 6% cashback if it tracks.

I did some research and it is a very good monitor but with some drawbacks, but what monitor doesn't! The 32" size is appealing as it is almost the same width as the ultrawide but a slightly higher height (although I realize I won't get the same in game view as the ultrawide due to the reduced pixel count of the 32"). The picture quality is supposed to be very nice at the expensive of some black smearing and a reduced ppi compared to my current 27" 1440p IPS monitor. It supports both Freesync and Gsync although you have to use CRU to prevent the screen flickering black. Quite a few compromises but for the sake of saving £500 it may be worth it if I can live with those compromises. If not I can always send it back and spend the extra on the AW3420DW.

I will leave a review of the S3220DGF when I receive it which may not be until early December according to Dell.

The S3220DGF is a VA panel and having returned a VA recently, I def prefer IPS like the AW3420DW or the LG.
Maybe look at a VA in currys first?

Yeah it is a consideration. If I don't like it I will just return it but for £500 saving it is worth a shot and there seems to be many happy people with this monitor.

Just ordered the AW3420DW for £746.81 with 12 months interest free which seems a good deal. Well relatively speaking anyway :)

The LG is the best but good luck trying to find one. The Alienware AW3418DW is supposed to be better than the slightly newer AW3420DW, which is why the AW3420DW is cheaper! The only minor problem with the AW3418DW is trying to find one. Stock is pretty low.
