What is the most visually stunning Science fiction show/film ever made.

No probs, if you're talking about BSG i cant actually comment 'cos i've never seen it :p

 LEAVE THIS THREAD! :D go take a peak at the video link i placed for it in the OP :)

p.s. Northwind, appols for the grumpiness, i had a bad day today :(

Another mention for Bladerunner - and it hasn't aged one single bit. Amazing film.

Of course Star Wars has to be mentioned - Revenge of the Sith in particular was visually stunning from start to finish. The originals are starting to look a bit dated, as much as I still love them.

I also really like Gattaca. And Spielbergs War of the Worlds. Oh, and Pitch Black was cool.

I came in here when i saw the B5 stuff but felt i needed to say something about BSG and how appalling this show actually is.

THe effects may be the most polygon intense ever but really you think that is good viewing? The jerky camera style is frankly annoying after the first time you see it.

Everytime i watched an episode i asked myself afterwards, why on earth did i bother doing that??? But i still watched it on the odd chance there was a good bit, which now and then there was, to its credit! :)

They need to start cutting down on the acting scenes in BSG and start ramping up the fights. None of the new charcters can act or play the parts half as good as the old series.

Starbucks a bloody women for starters..... and although she is a bit fiesty she aint cool enough.

The cylons.... well they are a bunch of faggots now to put it bluntly. they die to bullets... fracking bullets.... wheres the lazer beams???? no one wants to see bullets in space and nuclear weapons????? The irony of BSG was that they spend all their life getting to the 13th colony earth to find we are a bunch of 70s "noobs" with no advanced technology to help defeat the bad guys.

All this critisicm aside it is still one of the better sci-fi series around at the moment, but only because f the poor/none competition.

Im sure future series of it will be better than the one i saw. better be lol ;)

As for overall sci-fi themes you cant forget Fifth element for pure "comic book "style genious, i dont know anything about it to comment but the whole style of that film is excellent.

thankfully its not annoying to the several million people in the USA who watch the show every week religiously. I like it and its not overdone as they don't use that style all the time. there are lots of nice steady "ordinary" camera uses too.

ahahahahahahahaha.... rose tinted indeed, i watched season 1 of the old galactica today and let me tell you for the most part it was cheesy as hell, with many MANY actors doing a fine impersonation of cardboard... however it was enjoyable... i mean who the **** chose the guy who played the original Gaius baltar ??? i kept expecting the guy to laugh evilly and twizzle on some imaginary moustache... that plus he looks and sounds like a klingon from 60`s startrek.

You called the new cylons faggots... did you forget this Cylon guy from the original series... he is a Cylon called Lucifer and features heavily in season 1 of the original series.

im guessing you did. That cylon was as camp as Christmas, id say i was a fair judge of campness, and trust me, this guy made Liberace look straight.... as for no lasers, its better that way in my opinion, keeps the tech grounded a touch.

And you also have missed that there are different types of centurion, standard assault models do not cary heavy armour and can me killed with conventional weapons, the special assault teams one of which boarded galactia in a heavy transport were ALL armoured, it took explosive rounds to take them down. far more than the odd wimply single laser blast i saw the original toasters dropping to today.

its all fantastic but if you havent seen it in order its pretty pointless as the story is running from the 3 hr miniseries right through the life of the show. events have been set in motion and like Babylon 5, it makes no sense at all to late comers who think they can just drop in in the start of season 3 and understand the implications and consequences of actions past.

I'm all for space battles á la B5, but the amount of characterization that's been introduced in BSG is one of the shows strong points. You get a real sense of what it's like being there; ordinary people trying to survive and do human "stuff."

As to getting better, I've been fortunate enough to see the opening episodes of season 3 and eps 1 through 4 are enthralling. Some good space battles as well :p

BSG is brilliant sci-fi, but as to draw dropping moments, the early sequence in Event Horizon when the camera pans back from the space station in Earth orbit.

Dont know if its been mentioned yet... Howeverm the inspiration for the scenery in Bladerunner came from the director viewing ,AFAIK, Middlesbrough at night replete with flames emitting from some chemical pant

Visually stunning? all the new starwars films are right up there, but maybe im alone in thinking using too much cgi is like cheating, i hate it.

Old school visuals i would go with Alien, set design is amazing, also Forbidden planet, for a film made in the 60's it looks fantastic even now.

Probably something like Terminator 2, Alien or Aliens for me. Aside from Terminator, these films used very little or no CGI and the results were amazing :) The Xenomorph ship that they investigate on Alien... the set is amazing. Then the visual effects on Aliens... ground breaking at the time.

Will be watching all of these over the Xmas break :D
