What is this shiny new box BT are advertising?

Ive just seen an advert from BT saying they have a box that can give 1.5meg more speed. It looks like a wall socket.

Any ideas what they are trying to pass as a better service this time?

It is a different socket to the one you currently have as your main socket. It is just the frontplate which is different. It reduces noise, signal etc to give you better speed.

If you're plugged into your master socket already I don't think it makes any difference. I think it only may be of use on an internal extension, though since most stuff is wireless I'd strongly recommend just putting the router into the master socket.

i think this unit only work on the master socket anyway - It wont fit onto any extensions.

I must be mistaken in what it does then, sorry. I haven't heard many reports of it making much difference to BT customers. Getting a better router than the rubbish ones they give you free is probably the best way to improve your connection.

You only have to pay the postage for it through the BT website that is linked above, if you have the correct socket for it to be fitted onto.

No but you're unlucky (or foolish) if you're with BT! ;-)

I think that's what he meant. Really, their support is horrendous. Not that much can be said for many other suppliers.

These have been available for at least 4-5 years. Apparently because we only have 1 phone socket it won't work for us, so instead they can send around someone to check our microfilter and have a look at our telephone extension for only £89.99 :D

The only thing these things do is cut out any phone extension wiring for the ADSL side of things so any dodgy extensions don't affect the signal.

Thier support may not be the greasted, but because they own most of the exchanges (atleast they do round here) they provide the most stable and fastest connection for me.

Unless you have poor wiring or more than one phone extension it most probably wont work for ya!

And that £89.99 call out fee is a joke, i had an engineer come round to check my cabling out for free!

Standard practice. Claim it's a fault with the micro filter, change it with one that 'works' and a few seconds later, after a quick phone call, you're back online.
