What job pays more. Lorry driving or Taxi ?

Self employed or working for somebody?

Class 2 lorry drivers don't actually earn massive wages only £7 to £8 per hour (location dependant) so even with overtime of say 15 hours per week, your only looking at £22k to £26k per annum and that's doing 55 hours per week. Class 1 lgv drivers earn substantially more.

Taxi driving tends to more unsociable hours (most money to be earn't working Friday/Saturday nights, Christmas etc) but can pay big money (dependant on working for yourself or a big company)

Working for a taxi company pays less but less hassle. Normally they supply the car and you pay a daily fee plus fuel and the rest that you make is yours. If you can do the hours expeciallly nights then expect earnings of £30k per annum.

It's harder to qualify for a taxi driver though as the rules are quite tight.

A friend of mine runs his own taxi in a rural location and at Christmas with parties he can make £200+ per night on Friday/Saturday nights.

Downsides are having drunks in your car.

ANyway, train driver is what your want to be. Less hours are average earnings of £34k per annum.

depends which company you work for a mate of mine is on £400 a week (after tax) for being an LGV1 (C+E) and prior to him passing was on £350 a week (A.t).

I only know one taxi driver, my wifes Uncle and he doesn't do too bad.

However off toppa me head i'd say LGV Driver all the way. Shell truckers get £48,000k as they had a strike about their pay last year.

I'm not so sure, - I earn £7.10 per/hr before 6PM and £8.10 per/hr after 6PM - I'm a Class 1 driver.

Yes, there's money to be made by driving for a living (last year I earned nearly £32k before stoppages) but by God, you have to do the hours for it.

Personally, I'd rather drive an HGV than a Taxi, especially over a weekend.

At least my load won't throw up over me, try to dodge paying or, at the extreme, murder or assault me.

Shell truckers don't get £48k per year more like £38k with overtime (from speaking to the Shell tanker driver who used to deliver to my old depot) many of the drivers who went on strike last year have been quietly got rid of I think you'll find.

I work on the railway as a signaller, but want to be a train driver eventually though, 40-60k depending freight/passenger iirc. Suicides not good though!

my dad is a taxi driver (private hire) and has been for the past 17 years. The credit crunch has hit badly and he's not earning as much as he used to. My dad used to lift around £300 on a saturday and he told me that the other week within 4 hours, he lifted just £14. Shocking.
