What "man jobs" have you done today?

Sorting out all my bits for the new computer room(sons old bedroom). Of course the wife wants to put her stuff in here aswell.

A lot of head scratching...

Boiler seems to want to fire at will for 20-30s despite no demand for heat from controls in what seems like a bid to maintain flow temp, pump over-run hasn't been wired up so eventually it cooks itself dry and creates lots of air.

I've isolated that it's not the PCB or either 2 Port Valve or the controls. When the boiler is on, but set to 'off' no rogue firing. In 'heat mode' (heat only boiler) the mischief begins.

I can only think that the frost protection stat is borked but I wouldn't be surprised to find it doesn't have one when I eventually open up that wiring junction.

Previous owners had wired the external pump to run 24/7 as a bodge and I'm determined to not let this beat me. Nothing obvious in any of the diagnostic menu's but I am not a plumber or electrical engineer by trade.

Anyone know what the smallest waterproof connectors are?

I've put Wagos in some external lights, but I'm mindful the connections need to be waterproof - but the backbox of the downlights we've got have very limited space, especially with two cables coming in to the back of it , and the included chocolate block connector in it's housing takes up too much space in the fitting!

Thinking Wago gel box may be an option, but need to measure the inside of these to be sure - anyone got any ideas?

I’m not sure what you are trying to achieve? The connections should be inside the lights which themselves should be IP rated if they are for outside, you shouldn’t need any further waterproofing.

Edit: might need a picture of the issue to give any advice.

Pulled up carpet and couple of floorboards as part of my office renovation. Could ever so faintly smell gas from one of the pipes. Called the emergency gas line and they measured some low amounts of gas leakage from the pipe.

Long story short, they've managed to isolate that pipe section and leave me with boiler and gas fire still live. Just the kitchen hobs that we don't have. Got my plumber coming next week to decide what the best course of action is. Suspect the existing leaking steel gas pipe will be condemned and a new run to the hos proposed. Can you run gas pipes in ceilings or is that a big no no?

This is what I mean - it could be down to my ineptitude, but I've two twin and earth cables coming out the wall, how on earth am I supposed to get them both back fed in to the sealed box (opposite side to the bulb holder wiring) easily? The second fitting with a single cable was just about manageable, but coupled with the fact I hate chocolate block style connectors too I'd rather go the Wago route and side feed in to one of their gel boxes if this fits....

Light fittings can usually accommodate 2 cables as it’s normal to loop one off another, that seems like a terrible design.

Isn’t the gel box going to look naff if that’s on the outside of your house next to the light?

I was thinking of using it instead of the box they come with, for an easier more secure connection
Your plan is sound and these work well for exactly this. I’ve had to fit customer-supplied lights of even worse design before and these gel boxes saved the day, tucked in the back of the light fitting. Wiska also make an equivalent version which are the ones I’ve used.

Perfect, thank you it's good to know my thinking is sound, Just to size up what gel box will actually fit in them then I'll get ordering.

Recycled some cherry from the wardrobes I ripped out a few weeks ago in to a windowsill.

Fitted some gutter guards having removed the snakes previously fitted when we moved in.

Also removed one pendant light fitting on the landing and replaced it with two in different locations, it was in the most useless place previously. I knew I was going to come up under the loft room bathroom which meant taking up some of the boards in the loft. Fortunately my measurements translated fairly well.

Yesterday I picked up a 5T Hydraulic log splitter, today I split about 1.5T of logs that were cut down in the summer, shifted around my log stores so I could get to the seasoned stuff...I will feel it tomorrow, but not as much as if I had been using my mauling axes!!

Started the job of installing Cat 6 Ethernet into the garage which meant I could buy two new toys, an angle grinder and a SDS drill.

Used the angle grinder today to rake out the mortar and expand the gap a in the path for conduit. Tomorrow I will fire up the new drill to install the cables through various walls.
