Hi. Been given a

AMD Phenom 2 Black Edition
x4 955 3.2GHz True Quad Core Processor

8.0 MB Total Cache
Socket AM3

what cheap(ish) motherboard is good for this CPU as not really up on things lately.

Thank you.

I've got a gigabyte ma-790xt-ud4p which you can pick up incredibally cheap these days.

I've been able to push my 955 be c2 chip to 4ghz stable.

Now I know it's just as much about the quality of the chip but this board probally had an aweful lot to do with it:)

It's only sata 3gb compatable and USB 2

The 900 series boards are probably the best choice as most (if not all) offer sata 6, usb 3 and piledriver compatibility, but it depends on your price point (start at £60).

Failing that there are some 700 series boards for cheaper on the ocuk site but be sure to check the cpu compatibility lists on the relevant manufacturers website as some of the cheaper ones will not support the 125watt processor that you have mentioned due to the power regulation on the boards.

Personally I quite like the look of this board for the money:

Its got usb3, sata 6 and supports the new piledriver chips if you ever want to upgrade. Unfortunately the gigabyte one that is 5quid cheaper doesnt support the piledriver 8 cores which at this point I think would be a deal breaker for me.

If you want something a little bit cheaper then this seems like a good bet:

Comes with usb but only sata 3gb and an older chipset.
