What mountain bike should I buy?

Go second hand, its quite easy to find barely used bikes on ebay.

I bought a Specialized HardRock Comp with a 21" frame barely used for around £180 a couple of years ago. Perfect size for me and I am 6'2". Will be loads better than any bike you can get for sub £300 new.
 
Buchtis you could take some out for a test ride. Bikes with slimmer smoother tyres are so much more efficient if you are mostly on the road. I don't know why so many people use mountain bikes day to day. As well as fighting the hilly road you are fighting big tyres and bouncy suspension (cheap bikes won't have a fork lockout).

Robj20 that's a nice bike, but clearly the op doesn't need a monster like that. Always makes me laugh when I see people riding those things into town, probably never used it properly.
