I want todo a oil change but im unsure what to use.

I dont mind spending the extra on fully-synth but what W should i go for?
Went to halfords they said 5-40w full for protection of 0-40w for performance.

What do you owners use?

Cheers

I am not a Honda owner, but I put Silkolene Pro Fully Synthetic 5w 40 in my 1998 2.0Litre Turbo

there is a whole thread about oil on Rovertech... I'll find a link

I wouldn't go for fully synthetic oil if you have run semi for a long time, you may find it dislodges things and gives you problems. I've stuck with semi synthetic. I'd have to check but I'm sure its 15w 40 Castrol GTX Magnatec thats used in mine...

Me and my bro recently changed the oil on my MB6, we just got the oil and filter from the local Bullseye, Carlube 10w 40 I think it was.

I'm running Castrol Edge Sport 0w40 (and before that Formula RS) in mine, but its been fed with fully synth since it has been born. Allegedly thinner fully synths will give you better economy, lubrication, protection and quicker start up (heat up) times. Haven't had any grumbles with mine but i don't know any better i guess :p

Mine doesn't burn oil like some other VTEC's though

Can be a pain in the arse though as it is so thin it drips off the stick!

You also might want to get some HAMP uprated oil filters off the Honda Revs dealer, they are more efficient, give you slightly higher oil pressure and most importantly are about a third smaller than the OEM ones with can be a ******* to fit due to the location of the filter on an MB6

I think most users on Honda Revs mostly use Motul, Mobil, Castrol and Silkolene, low viscosity fully synths, mainly on the advice of the resident (although probably frequents other car forums) oil expert "Oilman"

Im using fully synth at the min but cant rember what i used and dont know what was in it before i got the car (not stated in service manual).

The car sounds a little tappy to me (when cold and between 10 - 20min or drivin).

Sould i stick with fully synth or go for part if i dont know whats been in it before?

Cheers

The recommended is 15w-40 semi synth for a moderate climate(which is what the UK comes under). I wouldnt spend the money on fully synth for it to be honest, the engine just isnt highly strung enough to warrant or benefit from it.

A VTi engine not being highly strung? Well, I suppose you could put it that way if you don't think near on 100bhp/litre from an NA engine with an 8000rpm redline is highly strung.

The dealer that does my oil uses 0w40 fully synth on my car, that seems to be a good recommendation. 5w40 will provide a little more protection, but if you take things sensibly when the car is cold, you shouldn't have any real problems.

My bad I was thinking it was a citroen :D

Silkolene Pro-s 5w40 would be my choice same as I use in my car. Just bought some more this week £71.99 for 10litres.

I just checked and its actually 10w 40 semi that is used in my VTI, Castrol GTX Magnatec IIRC from when I was last at the garage. 5w 40 may have lower viscosity and come up to temperature a bit quicker I guess?

I'd read that trying to suddenly run fully synthetic oil could dislodge deposits in your engine (carbon etc I guess) which is real bad news, even with an oil flush first.

Its worth mentioning here that flushing oil is not advised for the DOHC VTEC engines, or so say two different Honda technicians at separate branches (have to double check you know!)

Aye, I go to an independent garage and they said that flushing oil on VTEC's wasn't a good plan...and to stick with semi synthetic because thats what its always had.

Sorry to go O/T but plans with my car are a Mongoose 4.5" cat back system, get my alloys refurbished and a few cosmetic scrapes (from car park drive offs and my dad's girfriend's car dying on me whilst reversing ) sorted. Still loving my car...its potent and planted on the road.
