What on earth happened?

Hi,

Last night I was just browsing the net normally, not installing anything, basically not touching anything at all on the PC apart from the web browser.

This morning I woke up to find my PC couldn't connect to any webpage at all but was in MSN perfectly.

I rebooted hoping it'd sort itself out but instead the PC took ages to start up, InstaAlert (a program that tells me when someone submits a support ticket) gave a Windows socket error, my username and password had been wiped from MSN (no, not a virus), PC Cillin gave some error but was running in the background fine.

It sounds very much like a virus, but I seriously doubt it is as I wasn't on any different sites last night, was just working on a website someone asked me to edit and browsing the usual forums etc.

So, I checked in the restore point (I did run Ad-aware last night - that only found cookies, but I thought it could have done something) and there was the usual "Software Distribution server 2.0" restore point that's taken every day by Windows, so I restored back to that (half past midnight last night, as in much earlier today). The restore went fine and rebooted, when the PC booted back up everything was perfect.

As I said, this does sound very much like a virus, but I do use PC Cillin 2006 - that updates itself every single day so I wouldn't have thought anything could get through that unless it was a brand new virus, but I still doubt it was a virus.

Any ideas please? It's all sorted now, but I'd really like to know what the hell happened?

Thanks,
Craig.

Hi craig,

Download a copy of HiJackThis (www.merijn.org) and make a log using it, then paste the contents of the log here and I will at least confirm or deny your fears of it being a virus or not.

I prolly wont have time to analyse the log fully and suggest a course of action as it is quite time consuming, however I can tell you some sites that will help.

Run trend Online scanner, that will catch ANYTHING that pcc may have missed

Will do.

Some of the dodgy looking ones like this:
O2 - BHO: PCTools Site Guard - {5C8B2A36-3DB1-42A4-A3CB-D426709BBFEB} - C:\PROGRA~1\SPYWAR~1\tools\iesdsg.dll
are just spyware doctor.

Thanks,
Craig.

Well I dont see anything to worry about in that log.

The only items that stand out are:
O4 - Startup: Shortcut to KeyCount.lnk = C:\Program Files\Tiny Keycounter\KeyCount.exe
but by all accounts this is a valid process, but do you know what it is and what it is doing?

Also is there a reason you have:

O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.typingtest.com

in your IE trusted sites?

As above for Keycount :)

Also, yeah, I trusted typingtest.com when I was on it as it didn't load without me trusting it as the test on it is java I think.
