What you fail to mention is that almost all the malware is apps that have been side loaded.
Of all the mobile malware threats that F-Secure found last year, only 0.1% came from Google Play, the official app store where Android users mostly go to get their app fixes.
The amount of people who actual sideload apps or know what sideloading means is so small that this really isn't an issue. And users also takes all fault if they are sideloading apps.
He's a programmer so knows what he's doing on has only ever gone online banking on his nexus 10, they got his username & password, the only thing that stopped them was the Memorable info password that asks for certain letters, like 2,6,10. They phoned Lloyds to try to reset it.
How can you even be sure it was due too the App, given the data is sent over HTTPS and is encrypted, no differently then it works on the website or any other app. It could have easily been a compromised WiFi network, given that it was a Nexus 10.
If there was a real security issue with Android I doubt everyone would be making banking apps for it.
Either way everyone in my family banks on their Android devices, barring me due to rooting my device. Not once has anyone had issues, so at the end of the way it is simple anecdotal evidence and pretty meaningless.
