What shall I spend £250 on?

No point in spending it for the sake of spending money - put it aside and wait to get something you really want. Or save it, add to it, so you can get something that may currently be out of budget.

Alternatively, put it towards a holiday.

Treat your folks to something? After all they helped you get to where you are....

Or just buy something pointless with it, as ultimately it's your money...

Because I want to spend it.

I'm making £7k from my summer job, that will pay off my debts, pay for a bunch of boring bits and pieces that need doing around the house and generally put me on a decent financial footing for when I start the PhD.

This money was a prize, I want to spend it on something I'll enjoy and remember having spent it on. Something I can point to and go "I spent my prize on that". I've worked bloody hard over the last few years to get here now I want to spend the small amount of cash I've got from it on something fun.

Or, to put it another way: all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

You'll also be able to explain to whomever you're speaking to that you got the idea from someone on an internet forum because you didn't have any hobbies or items you were interested in. =/

If you haven't got anything you want right now then why do you need to spend it? Wait for something you want.

I would actually do this, visit the pound shops in reading with my mate most weekends haha. We each have £10... The stuff we come out with varies from a true bargain to just outright pointless **** lol. So much fun!
