Don't feel ashamed to sign on. There's no stigma attached to claiming JSA. The stigma is attached to claim JSA and doing nowt.
Ridicule suggests you care what other people think of you. If I was signing on (which I hope to never do) I'd want to present myself in the best possible way which to me means wearing a suit. It shows that you have made the effort and presents yourself in a way that makes people take you seriously. I'd walk in there holding my head high knowing that I have better prospects than people wearing jogging bottoms. Don't bring yourself down to the standards of these people.
Whether it's a job centre or a job interview, it makes very little difference. You should still make sure that your appearance is a reflection of yourself as first impressions count for a lot.

I'm sorry but wearing a suit makes no difference what so ever when claiming JSA, it will not give you an advantage, they don't care how much you actually want a job and how much effort you put it, it's all irelevant to them.
Save it for the actual job interviews!
Confirming Job Centre is gash at actually finding you work.
People you know or agencies are probably your best bet at getting you a job. Reed and Office Angels are the first two I'd go with unless you work in a specialist field.
Just dress a notch scruffier than casual business casual and you'll be fine.
Do not wear a suit.
They won't care* and you will almost certainly look smarter than 90% of the people in there if you're dressed even semi smartly. As far as I could work out they had no discretion in what they did about anything and as I said, if you even look like you have hygiene you'll be well ahead of the game in the JC.
You'll see what we mean when you go but the lifers won't even be dressed suitably for maccy d's.
Take the dole. If you've been working you're far more deserving than a lot of the people you will see. Also when you do find work you may be asked to produce evidence of what you were doing and having paperwork from the JC to say you were claiming JSA will help fill this gap for them.

You must be very concious about what people think of you. Why would you care what people in the job centre think of you? Close friends and family fine, but the job centre?

I respect you for that, but trust us on this one, a suit makes no difference. You will look and feel out of place on top of that. I can tell you are lucky enough not to have the misfortune of falling on hard times and have never signed on before.
They will spend five minutes on you - maximum. They want to process you and the fifteen guys behind you and they have no time for formalities. The suit just makes things awkward. Rubbish. The Job centre couldn't give a hoot if you come in a suit or not.
