What should you realistically pay for an ivy i7?

thanks for the advise.

i probably will get an i5, i just wanted to know what you should pay for an i7 basically.

i did miss out on a gtx 950 for £50 quid the other week, well i say missed, they never bothered replying to me, have seen the old 670/660/660ti for £50-75, but too much i feel, someone on here selling older 580 for under £30 and fairly local to where i am currently, but it trade blows with the 5850 i had so no good, i could get a 7770 for £15, but again no good, i was impressed by a youtube video of a fx 6300 + gtx 1030 playing fallout 4 pretty well on medium, but £65 is a lot for a media card, im almost going back to a 750 the way things are looking with prices, but i want something stronger.

i keep looking at ssd's, but i think id feel better with a 240 rather than another 120 i had once and so far seen nothing under £60 used.

as for psu, if you look at my sig you will see im very good in that department, cost me £40 and was brand new unsealed, so its a keeper.

im not looking for fantastic, im looking for playable medium to high at 1920x1080 save faffing with res, i wont always be gaming, but would like it to be capable.

edit: in response to your other comment about fallout 4, i dont mod games, i have no interest, the free offline copy i had before was good enough that i liked it how it is, but i want to buy a proper version with updates, but im not gospel to that game, just want the option like..

but this topic gone a bit side tracked anyways, was only asking about processors lol, i got the 6670 because i sold my monitor couple days ago and a 32" smart tv im using doesnt have pc inputs so i needed something with hdmi and as its free then why not.

Oh,I thought you had sold the PSU for some reason. Its a bargain for £40!

A Core i5 should be enough - if you sell the Core i3 2100,then the Core i5 3330 would do the job nicely.

The GT1030 is around GTX750 level AFAIK ,which you can estimate by looking at reviews like this:

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/nvidia-geforce-gt-1030-2gb,review-33949-4.html

The GTX750TI on average is a bit faster. Also as mentioned before,8GB of RAM and an SSD in the future would be good upgrades. Luckily DDR3 has not had the price increase which have affected DDR4.

Plus if you look at my previous comments about FO4,install those performance mods,as they actually help performance a decent amount.

That's the thing though - if it ran fine on your i3 4160, it will run fine on an i3 2120 - it's not like they are world's apart (300mhz, and probably 5-10% better IPC).

Whether the 6670 was free or not isn't the point - that is likely your bottleneck in any of the occasional gaming you do, not the CPU.

What money you have will be better spent on making sure you have at least 8Gb of ram, picking up a cheap SSD (which improves general PC usage more than any CPU upgrade will) and picking up another 750Ti (or something slightly better e.g. 660/670/760/770/950).

i also ran that game and the other games on 768 res on high at over 50fps, i just havent found a graphics card i actually want, medium - high at either 768 or 1080 depending what screen ill use when i no longer use the tv im on at 40fps minimum is all i am trying to get, okay the 5850 was bad choice for 1080 even for anno 2205 which had to run on low nevermind medium setting, im just picky and been trying out different cards i could never originally afford.

after a video of the 1030 you suggested with a fx 6300 running FO4 on medium very well then maybe i could plunge if i find one cheap enough, but i am after power, ideally power i wont have to worry about changing in a few months.

£10 for 4gb ram which is what i need, just havent bothered yet and if im honest the 1gb OC edition 750 i had performed better than a 750ti i had ironically, but for the 660/670/760 im looking at £55-75 where ive been looking and that cex has a 960 of some kind for £100, i am trying not to spend too much on old tech, i would buy that rx550, but might regret it.

i wouldnt have thought the 1030 wouldve been comparable to the 750, interesting..

i couldve got the extra 4gb ram instead of the 2gb, but i wasnt sure how long id have kept the tower lol, but £10 for 4gb 1333 which is what i need, seems to be an okay price, will get some next week and for ssd, im still debating, okay was a used one, but i didnt find a 120gb any quicker than a 500gb or 1tb hard drive and ssd were known to transforming slow laptops which is what i fitted it in, but i may look in to them if prices are right.

Given that an i3 8100 is a 3.6ghz quad and is £109, I don't see any reason why anyone would at this point buy an Ivy quad for £125.

To be fair, you'd still need at least £200 more than that if upgrading for 8 GiB of DDR4 RAM and a new motherboard. But I would agree generally that spending that much on such an old chip at this stage doesn't sound great.

Eh that's a good point, but you're still chasing a dead end by picking up an Ivy quad. To be honest I forgot that Ivy CPUs generally fit Sandy motherboards, but then with his OEM board there may/may not be support for a 3770k.

Ideally I would just sell my computer and buy better system, but haven't found a cheap enough decent power supply replacement as I would regret selling my supernova I think.

So buy the new (cheaper) PSU first, swap them out, build new PC.

My second machine has a 3770, Z77 board and 8gb 2400 ram paired with a 1050ti under the TV.

I paid about 120 for the board and CPU.

Bios has been modded to be able to boot from nvme drives, so runs an sm961 128gb drive with an adapter. This takes 8 lanes from the CPU and the gtx uses the other 8.

The z board allows me a slight overclock on the CPU to 4.1 on all cores.

Ivy also has one of the lowest idle power draws compared to the other gens

So yeah overall a nice little build.

Thanks for replies.

I haven’t said I would pay £125 for an ivy i7, it’s what iv seen, I could just buy a haswell or skylake system that either slower or on par with my current i3 setup for that £125, I was asking what you should pay..

I’m not ready or have the money or even need to spend £300-500 for a coffee lake or ryzen setup nor want win 10 again yet, if I was to buy a new system like that I want itx, with itx cougar case(£45 one) as I don’t want a tower again if I sell my Acer, but currently I am happy with what I gave for my use, obviously I need a better gpu, but I chose this 1155 system because the i5’s costing from £20 so a nice cheap upgrade..

I’ve sold my 775 system now so I may get be able to buy a cheap psu, but I just haven’t seen a replacement computer I’d like anyways, found an A10 7300 laptop for £100 I’d rather buy if I’m honest.

I will one day buy the nice stuff again, but right now I’m not interested.
