the reference coolers arent great but i think they do that on purpose so the various brands can sell more for their own aftermarket versions, though the latest 6000 series by ATI/AMD are meant to be relatively quiet even with reference
 
Yep, the reference cooler on my gigabyte 470 oc isnt great tbh, 81c on auto fan speed, i manually set it to 70% when gaming and use noise cancelling headphones, (totally blocks it out), gonna replace the cooler with an aftermarket model. Card currently clocked at 750mhz.
