What tech advances are you non-plussed by?

3D definitely.
I also agree to a certain extent about wireless, but my girlfriends brother plays WoW non stop on an iMac over a wireless connection and never has DC's or latency issues so it's better than you think tbh. I personally wouldn't though dispite that.

To touch on a few points raised:

PCI support potential being phased out - yes that is precisely the sort of thing that I wouldn't jump onboard straight away with. As an example when ISA was phased out I deliberately bought a S370 mobo (Pentium 3 coppermine era) with an ISA slot because I needed it for my modem.

Wireless peripherals are another one for me, I can see how it will look tidier without wires but they really don't bother me.

High-end cpu coolers are something I've never really bothered with, my attitude has always been if I'm spending £50+ on a cooler to help with overclocking, then I probably could have bought a higher clocked cpu to start with.

DAB radio, heh. I've got two of them but the reception is EXTREMELY flaky where I live, the BBC stations are a no-no but I can get a few of the local ones. Can't say I'm overwhelmed with the sound quality on the rare occasions it does work either, maybe I'm weird but I find a good Radio1 FM signal sounds decent and comprable to mp3.

I didn't really embrace TFT monitors until 120hz came out. They are still sub-optimal compared to CRT (lower refresh rate, native resolution, input lag etc) but are a lot more practical.

SSD is something I'd like to play around with, maybe something I could ask the wife to get me as a present or whatever. Doesn't seem to be coming down in price that quickly though, was around £2/gig now £1.60 or so? Some of the newer stuff with built in RAID giving 500MB/sec looks nice, but expensive. If that kinda thing became affordable I'd definitely be interested.

HD
Do we really need higher resolutions or is this just another way t make so many things we own go out of date?

Games Consoles
Mostly for the fact that all games now have to be console ports and thus be simplified and poorly optimised.

3D graphics engines and other fancy graphics effects
Remember when games used to be sold to you on the basis that they were fun to play and not because they had fancy effects that required 2 really expensive graphics cards to play properly.

Surround Sound
Mostly because I can't really find a place to put all the bits required.

Advanced BIOS'
What was wrong with motherboards having jumpers on them to set up cpu clocks, multipliers, voltages, etc?
First there was a brief period of flip switches, this wasn't bad, nice idea. then we got on to BIOS' that auto-detected the settings for you and allowed you to set everything up via a menu system. Where's the satisfaction in setting that up when the BIOS does it for you!?

USB Mice & Keyboards
Most motherboards have PS/2 connectors on them for keyboards and mice, so why not use them? If they need to be made faster then make a PS/2.1 port or something that is backwards compatible. What happened to the old bigger PS/2 keyboard sockets? What was wrong with them?

VGA/DVI/HDMI/DisplayPort
Pick a display connector and ******* stick to it please! :)

Excellent point. Not about the HD, the difference is pretty clear and desirable but the notion of technology going out of date is a very controversial one in my opinion. In fact things going out of date in general. Sports games on consoles being one of them. They get yearly updates like pro evo and I can tell you my favorite is pro evo 3. These games can go for years without meaningful improvements. My solution this year was to go out and buy pro evo 2008 on *** for a quid.

It also baffles me about why new mobile phones come out so quickly. The technology to make calls and send texts is the bread and butter. I can't help but to feel that the apps and other justifications for upgrading are terribly gimicky!

One thing I do appreciate about upgrade culture is that when people buy new stuff like 3D TVs, I can buy something sensible for less than 400 quid. I just noticed today an old thread on another forum. Some bloke trying to get a HD tv in 2005, 32 inch 1000 quid. Got to be thankful for these things!

Personally I can live without tablet PCs, I spend enough time watching movies and playing games, I don't really need to carry a touch screen PC around in my bag just to do it a bit more on the train/bus...
