After my shuttle's motherboard died, i'm left with the following components....

amd a64 x2 4800 socket 939
agp x 1950 pro 512mg
74gb raptor
1 gb geil ddr400 ram
creative xi-fi gamer

i'm thinking of selling the cpu and shuttle (for spares), and purchasing the following.....

Antec NSK4400 Mini Tower Case - 380W SmartPower PSU £46.99
Intel Core 2 DUO E6300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.86GHz (1066FSB) -Retail £119.84
Asrock 4CoreDual-VSTA (Socket 775) PCI-Express/AGP DDR2 Motherboard £46.99
Shipping : £9.95
Total : £225.51

Can this be improved on or would you try to sell more of the original components?

cheers.

I would just get another GB of ram and a new motherboard/case. With that C2D motherboard you won't be able to overclock much and at stock the the e6300 is no faster than a 4800+.

Plus you would have to buy DDR2 (unless that motherboard has DDR support?) anyway.

Thanks for the quick reply...
I've just checked the spec on the asrock and it supports ddr or ddr2, is there a big performance difference between the memory types?

The other reason i picked the asrock is for the agp - with the option of pci-e later if i upgrade my graphics card.

cheers

Ah, didn't realise you had an AGP card.

Then sell the old RAM, having 2GB is important for games, photoshop etc. and very useful for Vista when/if you get it. Because of the CPUs higher multiplier you should be able to get 300FSB or 2.7ghz which would have only been 2.1ghz on the e6300.

Thanks for the spec...
If i manage to overclock the e4300 to 2.7 how would this compare to the x2 4800? ( i've read a lot of good reports on the core2duo but never seen one in action ).

One other thing - will the retail fan be good enough for the overclock you've suggested?

thanks again.

The core 2 duo's outperform the AMD X2's even at stock, whats so good about them is that they can be overclocked so easily, and so well. On stock cooling I would expect 2.4GHz speeds would be safe but after that you would probably need to look towards an after-market cooler!
