What was he thinking...?

I would hazard a guess that only a small percentage of people that play violent video games, watch violent films or listen to evil music, actually carry out these acts. so I would say the only link with them is the one people want to make because no one likes the unknown. the world would be a scary place if people could carry these acts out for no reason other than because they can, so we need to attach a logical reason to it to make us feel safer.
there will always be sick people, nothing will stop that. banning video games, films, music....wont help. giving everyone amazing lifestyles so they can have whatever they want in the world wont stop it either, there is no cure, some people are just broke. what we can do however is study it and find any possible early warning signs, so it can be stopped before anything horrific is carried out.

I would lay a small amount of money he will be making the fun trip between segregation units in different prisons for a little while the first time he is challenged away from lying on his bed staring at the ceiling thinking about shooting people.
 
Desensitisation is all around us, the constant charity ads on T.V., the gore that is used and shown in media/news today, you can watch entire warzones on your T.V. and it could be just "interesting".

Once this occurs, you may start to find it all amusing, the senseless and pitiful human struggle that could be stopped within weeks if people cared.

But people don't.
