What would you bring back?

A computer with a 64-core 18GHz CPU, overclocked to 25GHz, 128GB RAM, an exebyte hard drive, a DX 17 graphics card, an optical drive that can play the next video format after blu-ray, and MS Windows 2023 Ultimate 128-bit as the OS :-P

I'd rather get a quatum computer tbh, it would blow that out of the pond by a massive margin.

Not quite what the OP in the thread asked but I'd go back in time with an M1A2 Abrams tank and similar age weaponry to med-evil times then just go around and solo-siege castles for the luls.

What about fuel?

What about modern materials to service and arm the thing?

what happens when they pour Greek fire on your precious tank and turn it into an oven?

:p

With the archive you can ascertain which stocks that are now low in value will increase. You can also ascertain how day trades will go. Which IPOs are of value. Which if any stocks are worth buying at lows and which to get rid of at highs, as well as knowing what the highs or lows are. An ability not only to profit from Bull conditions but Bear conditions as well. Although once a fund has fund has grown to a considerable amount the only avenue of real profit is the IPO and seed funds as the margin traders would be keeping an eye on your trades, as they already do with the major corporations.
Knowledge is power, not only financial knowledge but also the news which the archive contains.

Why go through all that malarky when you can just get the numbers of some lottery wins?

Pfft, I'd imagine I would have enough fuel for a good days pillaging and destroying. And as for servicing, I was thinking about the short game!

I would go into the past and bring back the Plague. Just for the lulz.

the bubonic plague is relatively simple to treat these days. In fact there is a vaccine (although not commercially available now).

You would be better off bringing back Spanish Flu.

She's an android not a child. :o

The lottery number archive would be the best idea. Then you can just win the lottery whenever the hell you want.

limitless money :)

Another idea would be a record of the FTSE100 share prices, you could become like Warren Buffet & be the toast of the city, be invited to the best parties & have politicians bow & scrape to your every command. :p

It's not certain that the plague, i.e. the 1347-50 pandemic, was bubonic/pneumonic/septicaemic plague, or not that alone. There's some evidence it was a viral haemorraghic fever, perhaps in addition to yersenia pestis infection, at least in Europe. For example, quarantining people is recorded as being effective. It wouldn't be effective against a disease transmitted by fleas from rats because quarantining people didn't quarantine rats. A virus would also explain the unusually high occurence of the CCR5-delta32 mutation in Europe.

I don't know what I'd bring back.

As many matter-energy convertors as I could fit into the time machine, with detailed technical manuals and any related text that I could get my hands on. All the electricity we could possibly want generated perfectly cleanly from a few handfuls of any matter. I'd become incomprehensibly rich and widely revered. With the manuals and a spare machine or two for testing, scientists and engineers would probably be able to work out how it works and how to make more. And I'd still be aging to death in a few short decades.

Perfect medical nanobots. No aging. No diseases. No toxins. High resistance to death from injuries not immediately fatal. Whatever physical shape I wanted. I'd probably live vigorously in perfect health for a thousand years before murder or accident killed me, maybe much longer. And human civilsation would probably collapse as a result of the massive changes imposed immediately by this technology unless I kept it to myself, which would destroy me with guilt.

This is basically a "the [insert supernatural creature here] gives you a wish. What do you wish for?" thread. Those stories never end well.

However it is widely accepted that the Plague refers to the Bubonic Plague, also the plague wasn't a single widespread outbreak, but hundreds of smaller localised outbreaks across Europe, Asia and the Mediterranean. Some may well have been Haemorrhagic fever, but as those outbreaks are relatively short and extremely localised it is doubtful that it alone could have travelled across such a vast area.

Smallpox would also explain the prevalence of the CCR5 protein in Europeans.
