What would you do?

Depends on how old you are and what your life situation is. You haven't given us a lot to go on.

I'd invest it and make regular payments against my mortgage, without triggering the early repayment fees. I'd probably do some work around the house, too.

We've just got a new car, so we don't need it for that.

£50k is not a lot of money to be honest. I'd just put it in the bank with the rest. Maybe buy a new car.

Yeah I agree 50 grand is not a crazy amount. However I guess it all depends on your situation. If you have large commitments and investments, it will probably just be a drop in the pond, however if you're free as a bird (so to speak) then 50,000 can be an awful lot. Especially if you're moving to a country where your money goes further.

I didn't want to tie it too much to a specific amount of money. It was more the general idea of having nothing to hold you back and decent bit of cash to back you up for 6+ months

I don't think age makes much of a difference (within reason).

I did say the life situation was you had no financial or personal commitments and were free to do as you please :)

Having a mortgage is a form of debt, so that wouldn't quite apply

£50k not a crazy amount? think how hard people have to work for £50k

Go back to college and then to university, stay living at home and get a job, come out of uni debt free and with solid savings.

A lot of people have to work 3-4 years for £50k - bit harsh to shrug it off like it's nothing tbh.

"Bigger picture".

Many people in the world have to work a month for £5, I probably lose more than that a month.

In our society, £50K doesn't go very far unless you have things to start with, car + house deposit with maybe a holiday afterwards, yes that is a decent amount of stuff and yes people do have to work hard for it, however it's not going to instantly give you a better quality of life. A house is all well and good but you need the salary to pay the mortgage, you need to be able to pay for the car.

most people would struggle to save £50k over 10 years. to say it is not a crazy amount to be given is stupidity.

No it's not stupidity at all. We are not talking about an amount of money that people could retire on. It's barely above a deposit and fees for half decent house in many areas.

£50k is not a life changing amount of money.
