What would you do?

I would have thought cm1179 was about 17, but his profile suggests otherwise.

It's a lot of money granted, but not enough that you could jack your job in and live off it indefinately.
£50k does not go that far these days. Yes you could have an awesome year of partying and shopping, but it wouldn't be sustainable.

Invest it all.
Relax a little bit and focus on the plans I already had more intently than I would have whilst trying to make the 50K in the first place. :D

As others have said - while it is a significant amount its not a life-changing sum. No denying it is an excellent fallback amount. Id stick it in ISAs , savings account etc.

But I would get a big-ass TV :D

i thought my username might have been a clue to my age

anyone who doesn't take £50k seriously is easily parted from money

You have £50,000 in your bank account, clear money, no debts owed of any sort.

Where would you go and what would you do?

I'll be in a similar situation later this year. I plan to apply for a working Visa to Canada and try looking for employment while I'm out there.

If 50K is not a lot of money to some people on here then you are in a very fortunate position. "Life changing" is a personal point of view. Not everyone deems "life changing" as giving up work and living off cash you have etc.

To some people, "life changing" is just being comfortable day to day.... Anyone that smirks at that or cannot get their head around it have led a fortunate life but still doesn't excuse them looking down on people that haven't.

this.
i strongly believe that the ridiculous wages footballers get is responsible for a lot of peoples shallow realisation of the value of money

It depends on what you mean by a lot of money.

It's a lot of money for me to have in my wallet.
It's a lot of money for me to have in my bank account.
It's not a lot of money compared to what I'll earn over my lifetime.
It's not a lot of money compared to what I'll spend on tax.

It's all relative.

But... it certainly should make an impact to people's lives, even people who are highly paid.

I suggested paying it into a pension fund, as it'd buy me a few less years at work. Had the OP said they had a mortgage or some other kind of debt then it would be best used on that. Even paying off 50K from a 150K mortgage is significant, it means a few hundred quid extra a month, and by the time you add on the tax you'd need to pay it, then it's a substantial pay rise. Or alternatively it's years less paying the mortgage, which means possibly an early retirement date. It might mean making an extension to the house.

You would have to be very rich indeed for it to make no difference, and if you are that rich then you have to know you're in a very slim percentage of the population.

You cannot live off £50k for the rest of your life, nobody can say it won't make a difference to your situation but it is not life changing.

Just what?! I couldn't give 2 ****s about what footballers earn, has no bearing on my thoughts on the value of money.

You're saying it'd cost far more than it actually would.

Nope I'm quite correct, having looked into this already. Tuition depends on the masters tbh.. but the figure is correct for what I'm looking at. Also 15-20k for living expenses seems reasonable to me as I don't fancy eating beans and pasta at uni second time round.

That's still a lot of money! You looking to rent a 3 bed semi with a car thrown in?
