what would you like to see in the next windows

A better Live environment on the install media, with internet access and full support for launching 3rd party applications.

A smaller footprint.

If you pick up an icon in the taskbar and move it left or right and the other icons slide out of the way.

Why does it not do that for everything else? it should be doing it with desktop icons especially.

I haven't tried 7 yet but on vista they removed the "file types" tab from folder preferences. What if I don't want to edit html files in word? They should bring this back

Hold shift, right click file, select "open with", choose program and tick "remember this program" type setting at the bottom of the window.

What would people rather have? A safe incremental step like Windows 7, or something that breaks the back of a few problems but runs the risk of being another Vista?

Vista breaking things was a huge problem for businesses. Who wants to spend all that money on upgrading if stuff doesn't work. Not nearly enough businesses have taken up Windows 7 yet. If MS go and break things again with Windows 8 they will never sell it.

One browser feature Id like to see is the ability to drag a browser tab from one instance to another.

Use Google Chrome for that :p

But yes, dual monitor support from the ground up would be amazing! Lots of people use dual monitors, and it needs to be addressed.

You mean Spaces. Expose isn't the same thing. Although an Expose-type feature would also be nice.

Spaces, that's the one, I find once I've got it set up with keyboard shortcuts it really works well. I've tried various Windows progs to do the same thing but none of them work as well as they do on OSX or Linux.

VirtuaWin was probably the best I found but even that tends to screw up alt-tabbing...

I would like to see more customisation for installation e.g. an experienced user 'preset' that has file extensions turned on, show hidden files, etc. All the little things that I have to change following installation.

Full window transparency built in, always on top for every window option.

An option to disable all the built in microsoft products and security "features" with just one click, ie an option to install a barebones install, during setup.

A control panel that is actually logically set out and does not require you to be computer illiterate to be able to find anything.

full file association management.

make everything completely customisable, ie not require additional software to change the start button or login screen.

Have a never combine, never show labels option. (can be done now with a registry change and a restart)

have an advanced config section that implements all the registry hacks in to an actual settings menu.

Those two will never happen.
