Whats happened to all the WW2 Shooters!!

I think it's time for Valve to make a new Day of Defeat installment.

I recently installed DoD: Source and still find it really fun.

Many moons ago this time of the year i would be enjoying another release of medal of honour on my playstation. Then they disappeared and were replaced by call of duty. Now call of duty are releasing games that completely don't interest me in anyway, does anybody know whats the future for ww2 shooters????

Because people either

- Started bitching about yet another ww1/2 game being released
- Got bored of ww1/2 games
- There are only so many ways to skin a cat.
- Loved the refreshing direction COD 4 took and have been looking for that experience ever since
- Blame consoles, because they normally get the blame for everything

MOHAA Omaha Beach mission was the best!

Quoted for truth

The original MOH and addons were all very good, same as BF 1942 (still one of the best FPS IMO).

Of course you have the newer Wolfenstein out but that's definitely taken things away from WW2, although I believe Old Blood is more WW2, although all single player.

You have to ask? They got done to death. I think there are actually more WW2 FPS games than there are soldiers who died in WW2.

I would absolutely love if Battlefield made a decent WW2 game now. I don't think I'd be able to pull myself away from it if it came out :D

I was thinking this today. Wish they'd put MOHAA on Steam to give it a boost of life to relive some good times . maybe fix a few glitches (I believe there is a server mod that has taken care of all of them now?) .

It would still do well, such a classic FPS.

Is there only one map? I've only played on one so far.. ever game I find is the same map, unless I have to get level 5 to unlock that other mode? (must be other ones as the video I posted below is a different map) I do like the map I played in the forest though.

It's been a while since I fired it up, but I think (and don't quote me on this) that you have to select the different game modes like Skirmish or Encounter in the game menu to put other maps into the random rotation. Like I said though, don't quote me on that as I may be completely wrong.

One of the best things about this game, im my opinion, is the fact that the players from the enemy team don't have any sort of marker to show where they are. I love it how you can be slowly creeping through some bushes and then just catch the slightest hint of a pixel moving on your periphery.

Always like DOD for having MG42, I'd had it in every game if it was upto me. The guns in the movie Aliens are based off it

For a moment was thinking hah no they aren't then realised you meant the smartgun not the pulse rifles. IIRC its also the basis of some of the weapons the storm troopers use in Starwars as well.

heroes and generals can be fun sometimes but its paytowin kills it.

guy has tank rinse repeat shoot infantory in spawn.that kind of stuff kills it.

bf ww2 will probably be the next big one.

I remember watching a vid recently stating why. And it all came down to customisation. No WW2 shooter will provide the same sort of customisation as modern shooters, scopes, rails, laser sights, rifle barrels etc etc just won't be a thing. It will be a solid set of 'classes' with very little creativity which simply won't grip todays gamers. It's a real shame.

^That's disappointing if true. As a predominantly single player gamer, I miss the immersive feel some of the classic WW2 games (early COD, MOHAA etc.) had. Multiplayer kills the immersion for me, although I do understand the appeal.

Well I know that JackFrags sort of covers it in this video

Bolt action rifles, grease guns, Panthers, Stukas, MG42's, 'one rifle for 10 men', sniper wars in Stalingrad, Normandy beach Assault, Brecourt Manor, Pegasus Bridge, the Battle of Kursk, ...

Oh man, I'd love to see some of the old epic COD / MOH resurrected. These early WW2 games were fun and atmospheric. With next gen stuff, It'd be amazing.

Hard to see anyone who'd commit to a AAA (animations, scripts, voice acting, the works), 5 year development cycle for a WW2 epic though. Saving Private Ryan is but a distant memory. Although RTCW was quite successful, I'd prefer something much more realistic.

I was only thinking the other day that I wished there was a good modern WWII game out there now.

I'd love to see each level as an open map type level, played with a modern engine and really gritty muddle nasty graphics, if that makes sense.

I remember playing Hidden & Dangerous 1 and 2 back in the late 90's early 00's, that was a great game.

They died out. Back when WW2 shooters were a thing, everyone was calling for a futuristic FPS game from the likes of COD and BF. Now we've somewhat got it and everyone wants to go back :D

It died out once a stream of contemporary shooters started appearing (terrorists, gaaaah!). Everyone wanted to be COD 4 (which I thought was great). It is now moving to futuristic crap. Not a fan. Activision will milk the COD cow until it runs dry. Then after that, maybe someone will start making actually fun single player / co-op shooters once again.

The question is Kar 98k, Mosin, or Lee Enfield.

That sweet sweet Mosin iron sight and the bolt action reload of the Kar 98k. Good times!

M1 Garand and that satisfying "ping" when you emptied the last shot from the clip. God I miss CoD:UO :(
