With the rollout of the Intel Conroe CPUs I think it's about time I updated my rig (see sig)
Shock horror, always had AMD setups :eek:
What in your opinion is the fastest most up to date items that can be put together from this site.
Oh yea and sod the cost. :D

Things from this rig that I want to put in the new one are:-

Enermax Liberty 620w PSU
2 x Raptors 36Gb each (currently in RAID0 )
2 x Barracudas 400 Gb each
Lian-Li PC 60 case

Things I want to do with the new rig:-
Use it to store DVD's and play them direct to the plasma (a media box if you like)
Play games, sat in the comfort of the leather sofa straight to the plasma.
Surf the web at the desk :D

Questions!
Do any of the new type graphics card output on HDMi ports, at the moment I have DVI out converted to Hdmi and then cabled to the HDMi port on the tv.
Reason for asking is that the tv has a bit of a fit trying to set the right display res (cant manually set it correctly either)
The TV does have a specific RGB port perhaps this would be better suited ??
but if that's the case I would want twin RGB sockets (one for desk monitor and one for TV)
What's the crack with outputing Dolby digital and DTS, I can currently output DD to the amp rack but I'd like to be able to do DTS as well, any of the current cards do this ?

Anyway I'll add a few other questions later as right now I have to get to bed cos I've got to look at Gibbos car early in the morning :D

The main things I want ideas on at the moment are:-
CPU... I'm thinking 6700
MB... No idea
RAM... I like Corsair and am assuming 2gb
Gaphics... Who knows

Cheers
Andy

Well atm there aren't any commercially available hdmi graphics cards out yet (although maybe they've been released recently)
They should be round the corner.

Anyway, here's my suggestion (P.S. what you keeping is very good)...
  • Intel Core 2 DUO E6700 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.67GHz (1066FSB) - Retail (CP-129-IN) £349.95;
  • DFI Infinity 975X (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (MB-020-DF) £129.95;
  • G.Skill 2GB DDR2 HZ PC2-6400 (2x1GB) CAS4 Dual Channel Kit (F2-6400PHU2-2GBHZ) (MY-013-GS) £147.95;
  • Sapphire ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512MB GDDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-112-SP) £219.95;
  • Samsung SH-S182D 18x18 DVD±RW ReWriter (Black) (CD-078-SA) £21.95 - 18x :eek:
  • Scythe Ninja Plus Heatpipe CPU Cooler (Socket 478, 754, 939, 940, LGA755) (HS-003-SY) £26.95;
  • Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Music - Retail (SC-034-CL) £71.95 - Does DTS see here.
  • Subtotal £968.65
  • VAT £169.52
  • Total £1,138.17
Monitor? :cool:

Some good choices I was already thinking of in there, I like the 6700, cant see the point in buying the 6800 at that price when I think I can probably clock the 6700 up to that of the 6800 anyway..

Twin ATI X1900 XT ?? or dont they work like that anymore?

Although my desk monitor is only 17" I'm happy with that as I have the functionality of the 43" plasma to play with if I need more room on the screen.

I did have my doubts about HDMi capable cards, I think a better fix will be to use the proper VGA port on the tv.

Forgot about the rewriter, :rolleyes: I'm still using my Pioneer 106 which has done me well, I don't really burn enough media to make it worth changing.
All my current music and video is stored and played through the pc anyway.

Is there a speed/quality advantage using the G.skill RAM over something I would have considered better like the Corsair XMS2-8500C5 (which is what I was thinking of :D )

Everything is always round the corner though and you'de never build anything if you waited for the latest product lol, pretty pleased DTS is now available though, that should increse veiwing and listening pleasure.

hehe.

How can a video card output HDMI? I was under the impression that HDMI carried the signals for both audio and video. Does a HDMI video card also process audio? It seems to the that you would just take the DVI output and convert it to HDMI and add a cable to connect to your sound card.

{snip}there a jack for SPDIF passthrough on the card in which all audio channels are routed through the HDMI interface
From here :D

EDIT: Also Sapphire Radeon X1600 Pro with a HDMI slot :cool:

Good choice of PSU there, I just got the Enermax liberty 620w and Im delighted with it. I was a bit woried in case the cables didnt fit, cos my case is a Antec p180, I needednt have though as they are nice and long. It also makes a hell of a difference as its modular, so my case is about 100 times more tidy too. :D

Was a bit gutted I didnt get an Enermax lanyard as they did in the reviews, but hey ho, marvelous bit of kit. Now all I need is my conroe gear and Im one happy bunny. :)

I've had the liberty PSU for a good few months now after my Antec couldn't keep up. Everything seems much less crash happy now. :D
By "enermax lanyard" do you mean the cable roll of different connectors/leads?
If so I got that with the unit...

Got some further info on the crossfire side of things so yea, looks like I need two cards :rolleyes:
One master and one slave.

No I mean the thing that you can put passes on etc.. like a thing with a key ring holder on the end. I read a review and somone said you get a lanyard in the box. No matter though.

If money was no object then alongside these:

Enermax Liberty 620w PSU
2 x Raptors 36Gb each (currently in RAID0 )
2 x Barracudas 400 Gb each
Lian-Li PC 60 case

I'd get:

Intel Core 2 DUO E6700 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.67GHz @ £411.19

Asus P5W DH Deluxe WiFi (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard @ £176.19

OCZ 1GB (2 x 512MB) PC2-8000 Dual Channel Extreme Edition XTC Platinum Series EL-DDR2 @ £187.94

2x7950 GPU/ or wait for the top end DX10 cards to arrive @ ~£400-500 each

BFG Ageia PhysX Accelerator @ £187.94

Plextor Slot Loading DVDRW @ ~£90

Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Music - Retail @ £84.54

..and maybe custom top end watercooling/Vapochill

mmm :p

You'd have to be mental to spend that much and not buy 2 gig of ram IMHO! :eek:

this is true, but you can get hdmi cables that just carry just visual signals aswell... the HDMI cables are cheaper to make, are easier to use(no bent pins etc...) and in most cases carry audio aswell, you'll find very soon that you will get graphics cards with intergrated sound processors(or mobos that use both through a hdmi output) to use in HTPC's, the sony XL100 does it already to a certain extent...

question, what res is the plasma? its highly highly unlikely to be that high a res as its a tv still, afaik most even hd tv's aren't 1080i at the moment a lot are only 720i , if your plasma is only say 1000x700 ish and your 17" tft is only 1280x1024 then basically a x1900xt wouldn't even be maxed out at those resolutions in most games, a couple on very high quality settings might push the 17" a bit but thats about it. 2x7950's or even one would be a complete waste unless you have a 1080i HD plasma.

Select 1080i on the dvd player and the tv self selects this....

avhd.jpg

HOWEVER !

The picture looks a gazillion times better when 720p is selected. !

because 720p is a progressive scan output running@60hz whilst any HD res followed by an i(eg 1080i) is an interlaced signal only @30Hz hence why 720p(1280x720@60) is the most widely used...
