Unlikely to be a catch, but the freebie with supposed £10 I got from o2 didn't work on any of my unlocked phones

It's a proper Virgin Mobile website, so it can't be too dodgy. Make sure you read all the small print though; you'll probably end up getting some form of promotional material through the post at a later date with this kind of offer.

Quite a few operators have been giving out free SIM cards lately, purely to get more people using their services

i expect you have to register before you make "your first text to us".
the free o2 sims give you £2 free credit if you register them too
