Yes its that time again for dumbest motoring moment part 2
Id like to start the precedings with my new company motor ( two weeks old seat leon ) whilst visiting a client in rural wiltshire i took a short cut that wasnt and had to do a u turn down a deserted country lane, it was quite tight so i decided to carry on down the lane untill i found a gateway to turn arround in, eventually i found one and pulled in, it was quite far back from thre road and there was a wide overgrown grassy aera further down i could turn right round in " result " i thought..... half way through turning round there was an allmighty crunch and the car stopped dead, i got out to find a piece of what looked like plough ( it was definatly towed behind a tractor ) burried in my front bumper and clouds of steam from my split rad, it was then i realised that the grass was about a foot tall and the thing was allmost invisable as it had grown over it.

probably not the dumbest, but certainly entertaining.

driving 4 miles in first gear with the hazards on. Everyone beeping me and putting there fingers up :).

I ain't paying for a tow when I have first gear. Luckily even though iI must have been red lining it the engine didn't self destruct. A new gear cable and I was away.

Driven fast into a muddy field... and been unable to get out :(

Driven fast onto a stony beach... and been unable to get out :(

more to do with being to trusting in the abilities of a car(circa 10 years ago)

giving the car( punto gt turbo) death down a backroad (between kinglassie and cluny) approaching a tight bend at silly speed, applied the brakes rather hard only to have a brake disc shatter and bounce me into a field.

cue rolled punto and a visit to a&e for me

Me aged 12ish parking my mums car on our drive infront of Garage door, ended up going through closed garage door and into back of the Westfield that was still being built
That taught me the valuable lesson that the clutch needs to used when slowing down & car is still in gear :(

Thinking that going faster is going to get you to work faster on a single track lane coated in mud from tractors.

Then finding out that it isn't when your wedged in the lane sideways with enough grass and hedge hanging out of your car that you look like you going for the Britain in bloom comp!

Shatter? arent they ridiculously hard?

in my first car (a G reg Fiesta) I had a manual choke... VERY LUCKY!

One night driving home from my G/F's house (2am, 10miles on country lanes) ... about 2 miles in my accellerator cable snapped!!

HOLY CARP! No accellerator!! ....

I pulled over and thought for a minute... an idea just popped!

I stuck it in first gear, released the choke, slower let our the clutch and BAM.. I'm moving!! very slowly mind you - like 5 mph but moving haha.. my first task is to get up 2 miles of a steep hill... that was tricky with only the choke for power!! Coming back down the hill though I got up to 3rd gear and around 20 mph!! took me almost an hour to get home but very funny hehe! :)

Letting the blue and white roundel in the middle of the steering wheel exert its devilish influence on me and turn me into the dreaded BMW Driver :(

hey done that on a 1740 nova :)

Messing about with left foot braking, then trying to change gear using the brake as the clutch. :o Very embarassing and lucky no-one was behind me, was a really stupid thing to do in retrospect.

Would probably be the 1st time I lost control of a car: Going round a large-ish roundabout at 50mph in the rain, reached the point where a dual carriageway joined the roundabout after coming down a big hill, road got all snotty, car got all squirly. Lots of understeer, then a healthy dose of oversteer, then straight again, then some more oversteer, then finally straight again, after loosing lots of the speed I was carrying.

Not sure It counts as loss of control as I never actually spun??

Was motoring down a country lane I didn't know at a fair clip once and saw the road widening ahead, so didn't slow down. What I didn't see until it was too late was that the road surface went form smooth tarmac to very rough unpaved track, with potholes big enough to put the whole car in. I managed to hit a couple at a fair pace and heard some terrible crashing sounds, but I don't think it did any harm in the long term (Except to me....minor bruising).

Lesson learned I guess...keep an eye on the state of the road ahead when in rural areas :)

Not long after passing my test I was parked on a steep hill between 2 other cars. I needed to go back a bit to pull away clear of the car in front so I thought rather than bother with reverse I'd put the clutch in, roll back a foot or so then let the clutch out and be away. Nothing wrong with that, you think? The thing is, I forgot to put the car in gear! I rolled back as planned, tried to pull away, "hang on... why am I still going backwards?" .... *crunch*.

The guy's bumper was already held together with duct tape so, although I left my number, he never followed it up. I did feel a bit stupid though, especially as I had 4 passengers at the time :o.

The day after picking up my Octy, the 306 was still up for sale and the drive way is a little tight for 3 cars. I needed to get in the garage so I shuffled the 306 back, shuffled the Octy back just the Polo to move. I'm paranoid about hitting my shiny new motor and the mirror are more setup for my gf's 3mm from the wheel driving position. So... I decide to open the drivers door and look out as I back up.

Great... until I leant out too much and my foot slipped off the clutch *crunch* "oh fiddlesticks" I said to myself or words to that effect.

Basically the back bumper of the polo ended up ontop of the front bumper of the octy :( Luckily both cars only suffered a few light scratched all of which polished out. PHEW! :D

At the age of 16 I took my mum and dads car out without them knowing, a 2.0 litre Carina GTi.

I came down the road, drove up the driveway and hit the accelerator instead of the brake. Straight through the garage door crushing the wing on the brick wall on the way in (the paint of the car is still on the bricks 12 years later).

£5K of damage too. Somehow my dad managed to get it covered under insurance!

Good times!
