I'm returning to the UK soon and am wondering what the job market situation is like. I'm guessing it's not very good.
How many of you are out of work?

If you're not looking for anything too specific then the situation isn't as bad as many make it sound. The jobs are there if you're prepared to put some effort into getting one.

Well, I used to do admin work in the city, but i've been in Japan for last 20 months teaching English. I'm heading back at Christmas, as I really don't want to teach English anymore. I hope to go back and do admin work in the city.

Well the banks are doing quite well, spending lots of money etc at the moment, and London isn't doing too badly overall in general - so you'll probably be OK finding that sort of job.

Really, when I look in the IT job section on certain websites I see a lot of jobs for coders and no jobs for 3rd/4th line support.

Stelly

How can you "apply" for a 4th line support position

4th line is a fairly generic term meaning that support has failed through the standard 1st-3rd line structure in place, and you need to outsource outside of the organisation.

Not really, as a last resort they can always go work for British gas til things pick up.

Sparse unless you have specialist knowledge.

We have internal 4th line teams.

Gilly summed it up. Specialist knowledge or experience (particularly for management, there are always management careers advertised).

I got made redundant yesterday as the company went pop, so I'm thinking its not great at the minute, especially not in construction!
