Really want to update my current amd system to a core 2 system sometime soon. Problem is we have the new cores from intel and amd just around the corner. Something thats worth the wait or better to buy the system sooner rather than later?

The new AMD's could be worth waiting for, it's a little too early to tell.

DX10 becoming mainstream will make all new ranges of cards come out making the 8800GTX's look wickle.

DDR3 has yet to prove itself in my books although it might be a possibility.

Then theres the possibility they hold the performance crown for a month tops before intel smcks them to the side yet again.

Bugger, i hate this, i mean its nice that newer faster hardware is appearing but if you're gonna be spending a grand plus i suppose its better to wait and get the absoloute best for your cash at the time. :o

Really can't be bothered buying a new system now then have people screaming 6 months down the line that the quad 6600 is a bottleneck for whatever is the latest card at the time. :(

Am having the same issue atm, when should I buy my new pc. So you are not alone and im sure theres hundreds of other people on here in a similar situation.

I don't think DDR3 will be worth the wait, from seeing the initial 7-7-7 1066MHz im not impressed. Looks like something thats going to transfer lots of information in one go, but having long breathers in the middle. I'l be sticking with DDR2 until DDR3 is forced upon me, like DDR2 was forced upon me.

45nm will bring with it some interesting ocing I feel.

DDR 3 will prolly be crap for quite some time just ike ddr 2 was at the start with the latency issues.

Funny how now theyre clamping down on latency intel and amd now decide its time for new chipsets supporting ddr 3 which = new motherboards which = £££ for them both.

Its not bad enough theyre changing sockets more often than their socks theyre now changing memory configurations.

Looks awesome, apparantly the first spin of it booted into operating systems first time.

Not like AMD, whose 2900XT first silicon spin reportedly sucked pretty bad.

Just the roll of the dice i suppose, amd had everything going for them, intel had netburst which was crap but they stuck with it. Just intels turn to be on the ball for a while.

I'm in the same boat as you guys, just holding out till the 22nd July to see what happens.

So whats the deal with the next generation of NVidia cards - surely they're due?
The 8800's have been out a lot longer than expected - don't they usually refresh the lines after 6 months?

Whilst I can understand the desire to delay until the "next big thing" arrives, when it does, the "next next big thing" will already be on the horizon.

OK there are the Intel price cuts due on the 22nd July, but if you are ready for an upgrade then there is little point waiting past that time.

The only "right" time to upgrade is when you see that you will gain a performance gain that is worth what you are prepared to spend. When that time comes you have to bite the bullet and accept that by the time you have the system built its financial value may already have dropped and there will be faster kit available for the price you have paid.
