what's the problem with political parties taking donations from dodgy people?

watching an old episode of dispatches about conservatives taking donations from dodgy people and i don't understand what the fuss is about so hoping someone can explain this to me and the issue with it?

The thinking is that by accepting donations from dodgy people, very powerful and influential politicians will start looking the other way while they continue to do dodgy and probably illegal things.

Don't know about 'start' - Can't supply an example but I'm sure there's been more than a few scandals off the back of big donations. No doubt that's why the rules were put in place (and why some parties think they should be wholly public funded to avoid the problem in the first place).

seems a little silly though as the issue then is not the donation, but when they start looking the other way etc?

Yes but one could lead to the other :p

You don't want people dying by being hit by cars, so you prevent that by not allowing people to jump lights.

Why else would the aforementioned dodgy people be bribing them?

Oops, did I write 'bribing them'? I meant to write 'giving them large sums of money with absolutely no strings attached and no expectation of any kind of special treatment'.

Look up the origin of the old song; "Lloyd George Knew my Father". Not to mention the odd passport scandal, special exemptions for cigarette advertising for Formula One etc.
