What's the deal?

Originally ~£200 & ~£300 for 5850 & 5870 respectively. Good prices, which were part of the main appeal.

Now - ~£240 & ~£400??

Is it just a supply and demand thing that will sort itself out, or are these the prices for the foreseeable future? Those 5770s are looking better every day.

A small amount of price increase by ATI, a large amount of retailers upping the price due to short supply.

I think we are on the cusp of them coming down, I saw 5870 and 5850 in stock this morning for £310 and £210, blink and you miss em though

Well, I hope they sort it out soon.

I really need a new card, but I'm not paying £240 for something that was £200 a couple of months ago...and I REALLY don't want a DX10 card.

A friend of mine living in America just got a 5850 and it cost just under £190.00 the 5870s are around £250.00 it's can be very annoying having friends in the states.

Yes, that is annoying. Especially for me - I live in Ireland and so have to pay even more than you guys due to higher VAT. And postage.

Retailers (and the distributors that feed them) are not your friends. If they can tack an extra 25% on and still sell the product like hotcakes they are only too happy to.

Prices won't come down until demand for 58**'s at the inflated prices is less than the supply.

Yeah, bit of a joke - I'm waiting to get a 5850 or a GTX360 to play Crysis on (finally!), but not for over £200. Now that the vast majority of my gaming is done on my PS3, I've put my PC on a 3-year upgrade cycle...

Which should be soon, as supply is on the way up (seemingly) and everyone who is fine with these prices seems to have nearly finished ordering :) (Powercolor 5850s have been in stock for awhile now, even Sapphires not selling too fast)

TSMC are having a tough time with 40nm. So stocks are very low/non-existent.

AMD have bumped the price up and retailers have also bumped them up more. 0 Competition from nv for some time means we just have to wait for either a breakthrough or sit it out till the competition arrives.

TSMC have borked the whole thing up and the lack of competition from Nvidia makes things even worse. I'd say once the 360 an 280 launch and 58xx production stabilises we'd be seeing 5850s for £150 and 5870s for £250.
