What's your reccomended ISP?

would say O2 if your an old sub.
although no-doubt Be now with the recent price hikes to o2 and new customers.

iv used plusnet before - i do not have nice things to say about them.

That's rubbish. It depends what package you are on. Sure they offer 'budget' packages for noobs but they also cater for the more clued up users who know the importance of low latency and pings.

Mmm, 20GB of peak time usage for £16.49 if one is in a low cost area.

Plusnet Pro: If you live in a low cost area it costs £16.49 a month. If you live outside one of these areas it costs £16.49 a month for the first three months, then £20.79 or £22.99 a month depending on where you live.

"I'd like a one month contract please PlusNet".

Broadband with no contract: There's a £25 activation charge (you'll pay this even if you add Home Phone to your order). You can use your own router if it's compatible or you can pay for one up front.

Not such a good deal after all.

I didn't pay a penny for activation when I signed up a few years back. I get 30GB per Month with unlimited usage from midnight to 8:00am, very stable connection, UK based call centre and all for £18 per month. That's a good deal in my opinion given I can't get cable where I live.

I can recommend Xilo, At the more expensive end but totally worth it for good performance in the evenings on a Market1 exchange.

30GB? Which package do you have?

I'd say that's a pretty self defeating statement...
For someone who wasn't a "noob" would know:
A. Ping isn't a factor of any internet connection, it's a software tool for measuring latency.
B. Latency is probably the least important thing you need to worry about when buying an ADSL connection, the latency isn't something that'll change with a different pricing package. Infact relies more on the destination location and number of hops than the type and speed of the connection. I get pretty much the same latency pinging google from here sat behind a couple of LES100s with a 10meg uncontested leased line to a business ISP as I do on ADSL2 at home.
C. Why the hell would a cheaper package be for a "noob"? Surely it takes more knowledge to understand exactly what you need and save money by not buying more than you require than it does just buying the biggest one because you believe it'll make you score better in games?

I can't recommend Be/O2 highly enough. I've been with them a few years now and they're excellent.

Eclipse, on the other hand, I received awful service from and it took me over a year to get a fault addressed as they didn't seem to understand the meaning of the word 'intermittent' and kept closing my support ticket every time the symptoms went away.

I originally signed up for 'PlusNet Broadband Your Way Option 3' but I don't think it's called that now. Was only allowed 20GB a month to start with then they told me they were upping it to 30GB :D

*cringe* :D

Not sure. If the traffic isn't prioritized by PlusNet, he'll see a round trip time of 1000ms.

I've been with o2 for a couple of years and found them to be great. Apart from my nat type going to strict on a regular basis:confused:
I've just signed up with talktalk as they have upgraded the exchange near us and I got their plus package at a good price(£22 a month). If they turn out to be a bit rubbish i'll be going with BE.

o2 do update the o2box firmware automatically which might account for settings randomly changing. (obviously only if you're using the o2 box.)

I've had good experiences with all the ISP's I've been with, even after reading horror stories about trying to leave one of them.

Started off with Nildram early 200x and they were great. Only contacted technical support once, and the woman I spoke to was very clued up.

Tried Pipex and stayed with them for sometime even after Tiscali bought them up. Only problem I had was a line fault that required BT to touch-up the line, and to be fair Pipex processed it all pretty quickly and it was all corrected in under a week. I only left Pipex after the migration of system to Tiscali broke my account page.

Now with Fast.co.uk who have been good. Got no reason to leave, but I've been considering a change to Zen just for the sake of trying someone else. And for a better monthly limit to price ratio.

I've been with O2 now for probably 3 years, cannot fault them tbh.

I had this problem... both my kids have an Xbox, one is wired and the NAT is fine most of the time but occasionally goes strict, but the one connected via wireless keeps going strict most of the time. In the end I have bought a Sky branded Netgear DG834GT off the bay and flashed it with the DGTeam firmware, problem solved ;)

EDIT: The Netgear model DG834GT is a Broadcom chipset, which are most compatible with the O2/BE DSLAM.

I have this dilemma,Iv been with virgin 10Mb in the process of upgrading to 50Mb when i started i was getting good speeds, but these days its average half of the advertised 10Mb,Fair usuage policy is restrictive,as all me kids are on comps 24/7 and im often throttled all day to about 2Mb,dont mind paying for what we use and the worst on 50Mb they can do is throttle me to 12.5Mb which is more than we got now,However im in two minds as iv been reaserching sky unlimited seems genuinly to be unlimited after trolling through all the small print, and at £20 approx month inc phone seems a better deal out there than any other, would like to see some comments from sky unlimited and virgin 50mb users on this
