When will we see the the return of the great budget gaming cards??

There's always something better for £50 more, folks debating whether to get a 7870 might chuck in a bit more for a 660. Not everyone has an "easyride" financially :o

I think easyrider has a point in this case,as the GTX670 can be had for £280 to £290. The GTX660TI is not worth it at £250 IMHO and I am not a millionaire either - hence the thread title. If you don't have the money you won't be spending £250 on a graphics card - probably under £150.

I can remember another cost cutting card a few years ago - the 8800GT 256MB. Cheaper than the 512MB version and almost the same in performance when initially reviewed in many games. However,as time progressed performance fell apart and you cannot even give away one now. In the long term over a few years a GTX670 is a better choice, as the extra memory bandwidth will play more and more of a part in newer games IMHO. If the GTX660TI was a £200 card, then this would be fine, but it isn't.

The problem is that people complain about the price inflation of this generation and then buy the flipping cards instead of sending the message to companies like Nvidia and AMD that the price is too high.

Both the GTX460 and GTX560TI started at around £190 to £200 at launch for the cheapest cards.

The GTX660TI starts at £240 to £250 for the cheapest cards. Brilliant.

At this rate the GTX760TI will be £300.

I would guess 1st quarter 2014, unless glofo can help it (Thats if other big chip makers like QQ etc, start using samsung, umc and glofo).

Edit: Think we are staying on 28nm for a bit, so in reality, as yields get better and more foundries give competition, prices will drop across the board

Isn't it about the same as last Gen around launch time
580 was over 300, 570 was 270 and 560ti was just over 200 (225 for a windforce ti at launch)

40 quid up in 18 months... considering VAT is also up in that time...

you could get ref 560ti for just under 200 quid at release, thats a £50-60 difference.

Sadly I think they are behind us :( The 8800GT was an awsome card (I still have one in my wifes computer) and not far behind the Ultra which was expensive.

Im using this in my tower at the moment while im saving for a new one. Awesome little card. Nothing to it hardware wise but powerful little thing. Runs BF3 on high haha :p

When I mean budget, I mean £150 and under. There were cards like the 8800GT and HD4850,which offered fantastic performance jumps for a low price at launch, with most of the performance of the top card of the range.

Do you think these days are behind us or will 2013 be the year when budget price/performance returns??

We won't....Inflation in graphics cards/tech lifespan is like our normal life inflation over the years....played out on speed.

With tech lifespan so different in human years, compared to tech generation lifespan, prices will keep getting stupid until people just stop trying to swing their e-peen to have "the latest" graphics card, just to put it in a sig that they think people care about reading.

Anyone thinking now on upgrading your motherboard should automatically get on that is SLI or XFIRE compliant as that'll be the bes way to go when a gpu upgrade is needed again...just whack in another one of what you have in that particular generation and sod the overpriced next gen cards.

Maybe then Nvidia and AMD will take notice when the new cards won't sell

the cheapest in stock price on launch day was £203.47, so that's a £36.52 difference

did 560ti's drop in price shortly after? Yes they did.
I expect 660ti's to as well.

Clearly they aren't too expensive as several retailers have run out of some models already.

Without going back too far, my last few cards have been(all new and from here):

ATI 3850 256mb for £90-something. I think it was about £96. I was making the jump from AGP to PCI-E so kept it cheap

8800gt 512mb - £164

ATI 4850 512mb - £117 (release day and i'm guessing the price went up because people always doubt it was that cheap on day 1)

GTX 260 216core 896mb - £126 - these had been out a little while already but I remember a year later and they were £140 and still a recommended card

GTX 460 - £180 on release day. The most I've spent on a card.

at the monent, the only card I'm even half tempted to buy is the 7850 but, even though it's quite a bit faster than my GTX 460, really I'd want a bigger jump in performance.

It also does not help that some people also make excuses for the pricing due to loving AMD or Nvidia too much.

Agreed. I noticed the next batch of tech demo games is out towards he end of Q1 2013,so as long as what I have now lasts,I am going to wait until then.

Too true. People are cursing AMD and Nvidia with their mouth, while their hands are busy opening up their wallet and handing the cash over. Like the GTX480 was launch at a ridiculously high price, and people refused to buy it (along with the exeggeration about the heat)...so what happened? They slashed the price...and it wasn't by only a little neither.

there were plenty of sub 200 at launch. you have to shop around more to find the best prices.

well looking at a few big retailers with live stock levels it doesnt look like they are shifting that fast at all. But really neither of us are in a postition to really judeg launch day sales figures withotu access to hard numbers

thats funny cos I see where you got that price from as coincidentally I also decided to check a certain deal site and search 560ti then sort by date.
that 203 is for a 560 ti with twin froz cooler. If you look slightly above also 1 year 6months you will even see a kfa aftermarket version for 185.
so in fact my approx 190 release was conservative, I am sure I could have found a reference 560 ti on release for 170-180. So really the cost of 660 ti on release is even more of a bad joke.

On some other forums people are using the fact that BL2 is free with the GTX660TI,that its good value?? A game Green Man Gaming had on pre-order for £20.

Loads of cards like the GTX670 and HD7950 come with free games too, which are worth as much or more.

No wonder this current generation is so expensive, tart a card up and advertise it massively and people will hand over their cash. How about they drop the price of the cards without any games??

Makes sense.

Just look at the oc.uk website you got 640 for about £90 then you got 660ti for £240+
Yeah nvidia are doing pretty bad at the lower prices. The HD6770 is a better card than the 640 and I managed to pick one up a couple of months ago for just £70. Then you got the HD6850, the best card under £100 atm, which you can get for less than £90. Even the 560ti is having the hd 7850 favoured over it. If there will be new nvidia cards under £200, they might be trumped by competitors if the price/performance isn't right.

September.
650/GTS will be an overclocked 640 (gk107). £100-£120?
650ti/GTX (gk106) £150-£170?
660 (non-ti). £190-£220?
No idea how they will perform. Only speculation.

+1
Have you been to the future? Those prices look pretty accurate. And the 650ti will have to take on the current 560ti and the hd7850 at that price range. Tough competition.

I was waiting for 660ti, hoping to get it for less then £200.. even that seems a lot to me tbh when you can get a console for less. Am borderline now as to spend money on another graphics card or just switch to console gaming for good...
