Where are all the good RTS games?!

If you haven't played it already, I highly recommend Rise of Nations (as most of the others have already been recommended). While the campaign mode does play more like Risk, the "battles" themselves do go into an Age of Empires/Empire Earth type RTS mode.

...just play the old games? I got Tiberium Wars and Kane's Wrather for £10!

I still play Total Annihilation

I have played:

Company of Heroes
Starcraft 2
World in Conflict
Starcraft 2
Anno 2070
Total War (various)
Supreme Commander 2

With the exception of Anno 2070, none of those are particularly recent (ie out this year)

Give Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance a try, it's very different from Supreme Commander 2 and 90% of players that have tried both say Forged Alliance is superior in nearly every aspect.

Company of Heroes (+Eastern front mod or Blitzkrieg mod)
Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance
C&C: Kane's Wrath
Total War: Empire/Napoleon/Shogun 2 (+Darthmod)

Don't bother with World in Conflict, it's pretty to watch but not fun to play. I've heard good things about Wargame: European Escalation (Review Here) Or you could go old school and play Stronghold Crusader / C&C: RA2. If you want to play an RTS on console the only one I would recommend is Halo Wars, it's not bad for a console RTS.

I think we're seeing the end of RTS. It's not really evolved. Starcraft 2 is probably the most successful RTS game currently and that hardly deviated from the original, considering there was twelve years between them. Where is has evolved it got kinda shunned like Dawn of War 2. It's also kind of hard to play RTS 'casually'.

Plus you can't port it to or from console, and you can't put in XP gain and unlocks to keep people playing until you release DLC.
There have been plenty of RTS's that tried to deviate from the original forumla. In fact between 2003-2008 there weren't really any RTS that stuck to the original.

The thing is that people who REALLY enjoy RTS's and keep coming back to them are the ones who take them seriously as skill based games. Hence things like XP and rewards aren't effective as game incentives because they unbalance the game.

Also, somebody mentioned earlier that RTS's aren't casual. The reason for this really is because other games became much more casual. A match on Starcraft takes the same amount of time as a match on a shooter. But kids these days lack the attention span and patience to get good at RTS'. Why do all that thinking when you can just jump in to COD and blow someone's face off within a minute?

Kane's wrath was ruined by it's hero units. The original C&C3 was good though.

Supreme comander FA tops supcom 2 massively. Supcom 2 is a console game, make no mistake about it.

Have you considered DOTA 2? It's in beta at the moment but I'd argue that there is more strategy in that then any rts i've played recently. Furthermore it's one of the few games I've ever played where player skill and teamwork is so crucial, much like RTS games from the olden days IMO.

I have given up with the RTS genre because I love games like AOE2 and empire earth, was considered a top 10 player on empire earth and quite frankly I haven't played an RTS game since that can even challange it. Maybe supcom and coh but supcom doesn't have the community behind it and coh is too reliant on your team mates so without decent friends to play it with I cba with it.

agreed but SupCom2 has one advantage the skirmish games tend to be quiet quick (hand up i dont play on line but reading what others have said and playing the games ,my self in skirmish or campaigne mode).

One game i failed to mential was : "Metal Fatigue"
it deviates from the norm a little were by your forced to fight on 3 different levels and differnt styles, this picture sums it up nicely :

I actually agree with the OP, there has been a lack of high quality (AAA i hate that term) RTS games released recently, the last being Starcraft 2 which is 12-18 months old now. Starcraft 2 sold very well, but it had a large IP and Community behind it and i think Publishers are wary about developing an RTS without an established IP or Community.

There are a few notable RTS's in development C&C Generals 2 (Bioware Victory) and Dawn of War 3 (Relic).

and don't get me started on the Abomination that is Supcom 2....
