Can anyone offer some advice on a nice area of Crete to visit?

I am 22 and will be going with my girlfriend. We have a budget of up to £350-400pp for flights + accomodation (B&B or half-board)

We are looking for a nice authentic Greek experience, lots of nice Greek restaurants, tavernas, things to do, places to see and nice beaches. But we don't want any 18-30 **** with tacky clubs and full of chavs.

We have been looking into Elounda, but wondered if anyone had any experience of holidays in Crete and could give us some more ideas.

Thanks

dont go to Malia........unless you're after the Brit On Tour type holiday :(

Last time I looked, the western end of the Island is the less developed, the eastern end has all the resorts etc. The South side of the island is fairly quiet too. In fact I do know of a great spot, but I'm not telling coz I want it to remain a great spot ;)

agios nikolaos is nice

Agios Nikolaos lies on the Northeast coast of Crete. This is probably the island's most established tourist resort and is still centred around a working port and busy yachting marina. Agios Nikolaos is not recommended for those wanting a quiet holiday; it has a great nightlife and an abundance of restaurants and bars. There are two beaches which are small with grey sand and pebbles. For those who enjoy shopping, don't miss the weekly local market or busy reosrt centre for boutiques selling leather goods, ceramics and jewellery.

If you want to avoid the more touristy areas then you'll probably need to be somewhere quite rural. I can't remember the name of the place where I stayed, it was only a small town but still quite busy.

Knossos is worth a visit but expect it to be mobbed.

I went to Hersonissos which was quite nice. And fairly quiet although it was May but I don't think it gets too rowdy like Malia.

It was made all the more awesome as Greece won Eurovision and the party atmosphere was amazing! :D

Stayed in Timbaki many years ago and that was pretty good. Just far enough away from the beach to remain unspoilt but close enough to get there easily.....anbd the food was certainly cheaper than on the coast!!
