where to now,from my 6800gt,sli

Hi all, Ive been 360'ing for the last year but now im seriously considering getting back into pc gaming, I moved to the xbox360 because my set up was struggling to play at the settings i would have liked and i was always compromising framerates for eyecandy. My Pc is unchanged from when i built it over 1 1/2 years ago now, it is a 3700+ 6800gt's in sli, with 2 gig of ram and 2x 250 gig barracudas. BF2 was playable at high settings but when the likes of oblivoin and tombraider (next gen graphics) came along i had to play on med to low settings just to get a playable, but still stuttery in places, and i couldnt justify the cost upgrades at the time. Im looking now to spend up to £1000 and hopefully have a pc that will run games at decent frames. Could i get away with just a GPU upgrade? is there anything I could salvage from my current rig? or would I be best to save a little more and get a conroe package and one decent GPU???

single 8800gtx will leave you more than happy. even a single 8800gts is far more powerful than you 6800sli setup.

and you can sell on the 6800 cards to get back some cash for the upgrade.

if i were you and in your position the 8800gtx would be the no brainer decision.

Thanks, how about the cpu?? is it worth upgrading, thing is if i was to go fror the intell core duo 6600 then im looking at a new M board?. The main reason i didnt upgrade when my rig started to struggle was that the best cards out at that time were the 7900 and x1900xt and they were still expensive and TBH everyone was telling me that I wouldnt see a great deal of improvement, there was also a lot of talk about cpu bottlenecking so i just thought it was easier just to switch to the 360 for a while.. will the 8800 with my current cpu run all the latest games at 1280x1024??

That's the trick unfortunately. To get a SERIOUS upgrade to your 3700+ you've got to get a new motherboard, CPU and RAM (though I think there is a Motherboard that'll run a Core 2 cpu DDR), and that will set you back £400-£600.

You could have course try to find a decent clock socket 939 CPU (2.8ghz upwards) and then just get a 8800gts or something. That'd still be a massive jump from your current rig.

Thanks, Just been checking out the bundles, around £500 will get a duo 6600, motherboard and 2 gig of ram, then im looking at another £400 for a 800gtx = £900, thing is it will be a shame to strip my current system for the extras I will need, such as case cd drives HDD etc. when you think about it the OCUK full system for £1700 doesnt seem such a bad price and takes away the hassle of building myself, damn im £700 short looks like the 360 for a while then,lol

thats a new mobo, processor, 2 gigs of pc6400 ddr ram and a BFG 8800GTX for less than 900 quid use your current hard disks and you have a nicely specced system

you may need to check out your power supply tho

if it were me id just get the new gfx card. cpu limitation is extremley over exaggerated. come unreal tournament 2007 and crysis it will all be back onto the gpu again.
