Hi all,

I'm looking for something a bit different and thought it might be good to get into reading graphic novels and comics for a change, I remember reading my cousins The Death and Life of Superman and a couple of his Batman novels and loving them when I was a kid and I also purchased Watchmen a year or so back and really enjoyed that but I haven't gone anywhere from there.

So, bearing in mind my enjoyment of the Batman/Superman/Spiderman genre and also my willingness to try other stuff could someone give me a few pointers and recommendations to get started?

Appreciated.

Preacher is arguably the best GN I have read.

I also have Judge Dredd Case Files and Punisher Max volumes.

If I was to start reading Batman, where would be a good place to start ? I am thinking volume wise. Can you get Arkham Asylum as a volume ?

Serious questions BTW, I do usually take the **** in these threads, but I'm not in this instance :p

Is the difference that a graphic novel is one story all the way through, but is laid out in comic fashion?

Precisely this. As with books some of them are crap, some of them are brilliant. The Arkham Asylum one I particularly like, amazing artwork.

Answer honestly, is the term graphic novel a pretentious term for a big comic?

I've always just assumed it was adults that enjoyed comics but didn't want to be associated with the Beano :o :p

It is an assumption, I'm happy to be corrected.

I don't see it as being a pretentious term. It's a novel in graphical format but in layman's terms, a big comic, yes.

Some of them have very 'adult' themes so it's not representative to put them in the same category as the Beano.

Some to recommend:
V For Vendetta
Aliens vs Predator (films are nothing like this original crossover)
Judge Dredd: Judge Death (collected works volume)
Akira (original 6 volume epic)
Watchmen
Batman: Killing Joke

General Series (could go for collected volumes, etc):
Hellboy
Hellblazer

Probably, but I was told it's a bit like the difference between a magazine and book.

Comic = magazine
Graphic Novel = Book

Graphic novels tend to be longer and properly bound rather than stapled like magazines.

If you're interested in either the walking dead or y: the last man series I have both for sale (full y and about 9 walking dead) all in very good condition and for a much better than retail price, pm in trust.
