Hey guys,

Currently planning a nostalgic trip to Dubai, last time i was there was back in 1998 when there was only a few hotels on jumeirah beach and the burj al arab was just a metal shell. Been having a look on airline network and there are so many to choose from now. Can anyone recommend a decent five star hotel, I quite like the look of the Shangri-la having stayed in a few of their hotels across asia I know they have a decent quality of service. So any recent vistors where did you stay and what did you think?

Hope someone can help because all I have to go on is pictures.

Thanks
Luke

Only one I have stayed in is the Jumeirah beach hotel which was superb , visited the Burj and it was very lifeless ( even before you consider the price )

Since you posted no budget:

Ok so £2300 for 7 nights including flights is a little out of budget :p was planning on going for seven days, theres a deal for the jumeirah beach hotel for £953 including flights, I would say my max would be £900 but i've heard a lot of good things about this hotel and its been there for ages so its a strong contender, plus its five star deluxe which is better than everything else on offer. Apart from the burj al arab obviously.

No particular recommendations for a hotel, as I was only over there for a few days recently (working.... :( ) and didn't really get chance to check out the decent hotels / sights.

All I would say is be very careful about checking out the extent of any construction work taking place around any prospective hotels. Even some of the nicer hotels along Jumeirah beach have got some major construction going on right next door, often 24hrs a day - it would not make for a relaxing break methinks....

it is good , huge but still nice , the rooms are superb , the beach fantastic , only downside is that the beer is £5 a pint

Stayed in the Jemeirah Beach as well & can recommend it. The standard of hotels overall seems pretty high so you might want to consider if you want beside the beach or maybe more towards the city.

A shuttle bus runs from the JBH to quite a few of the malls etc.. so theres no problem at getting to those.

Sounds good, i am well aware of the major construction work going on along the beach which is why i'm a bit skeptical about staying there, in all honesty i don't see it as much of a problem i just don't want to pay for a room with a view and get a contruction site. The jumeirah beach hotel looks fantastic so thats definately a few more points scored, thanks for the comments thus far :D

ignore the construction , the whole of Dubai is a building site

if its the "next hotel" along it will be 2 miles away :p

every room in the Jumeirah has a sea view , construction is hardly going to spoil that

well actually in Dubai you never know ;)

only thing that bugged me is that you have that view from your bed and yet you have to get up to open the curtains  , electric ones wouldn't have gone amiss :p

/petty mode off ;)

one MAJOR thing to consider when going to anywhere in jumeirah, its miles away from the city, well miles away from anywhere really, you will be confined to your hotel, or nearby shopping malls , both of which are EXTREMELY expensive.

Taxis are getting more and more expensive by the day, I would take a guess that a cab ride to town will cost 4-5 pounds!

Therefore its more advisable imo to get somewhere near the city, not only will it be cheaper but you expenses will be less, unless of course you plan on spending every day on the beach.

.

considering it is about 15 miles I think a fiver is more than reasonable :p

my recommendation would be to stay on Jumeirah and use the taxis , in the big scheme of things it won't make much differnce to the holiday budget :)

Not in a place where oil costs 16p/ litre :p

also for food and things, the costs will add up.
You can get a decent meal for 1 person for around 10dhs (1.70 or so) in the city, whereas in these fancy malls, jumerirah, hotels etc you are probbably looking at 6-7 times that.

and in the Jumeirah beach 50x times that :p

We stayed in Deira when we went at xmas, was much closer to the city and most other facilites.

We were pretty glad we didnt stay near the beach, the whole of the beach area was just a massive contruction site. i say give it a few years until the work is finished and then i wouldnt mind staying in that area.

oh and taxis are dirt cheap, as is hiring a driver for the day if you want a tour of the city.
