Where to stay in Edinburgh? Things to do?

My girlfriend is from Edinburgh (well, she is from Scotland and has lived there a lot), and we've been back there twice together, in fact we just got back from a stay over the Easter weekend.

Both times we have stayed at easyHotel on Princes Street. If you're after no frills accommodation at a great price then I'd highly recommend it. The rooms are small, but it's perfectly clean and considering you'll be out most of the day/night, it's perfect.

It's pretty cheap and most importantly it is bang in the centre of everything.

4 nights there might be a bit too much to bear (we did 2 nights both times), but unless you're fussy it will definitely do the job - www.easyhotel.com

4 nights end of July:

£160 - room with no window
£210 - room with window (£25 odd each/night)

We didn't have a window the first time we went and it felt a bit odd. The second time we paid extra for a window room, and although you couldn't open the thing, it was much more comfortable place to be, plus we had extra floor space.

To reiterate, it's bang in the centre!!!

Thanks for the help guys! I will certianly have a look Scary Squirrel! The price seems decent and if the travel lodges are a silly price we may actually go there! We hope to book the trip this weekend if we can.

We are having issues with getting there.
Driving (from Loughborough) is 300 miles each way, plus there are car parking fees - We cant to avoid this! Train tickets seem very unreasonable - Flying from Birmingham (the g/f lives near-ish there) is cheaper.

Any tips for getting cheaper train tickets? I have used the trains less than 5 times in about 6 years!

I'd look at visiting the castle, the National Muesum for Scotland on Chamber Street, and the National Portait Muesum on Queen Street.

Also remember that depending on when you go, the Tattoo is world class, and that the festival/fringe with be gearing up.

I second the Grassmarket for somewhere to drink, especially if you like Whiskeys and Ales. George Street feels a bit expensive and pretentious for my liking but it's full of lovely restaurants if that is your thing. I much prefer the shore in Leith for food, it's quiter, more relaxed, and the food is still stunning.

I also loved the Dungeons and Dynamic Earth. The parliament was intersting for a visit and I keep meaning to get round the Palace at Holyrood. The Meadows are nice on a good day with a picnic and a bottle of wine/couple of beers.

Finally if you have the time, I really enjoy a walk along the beach at South Queensferry, taking in the views across the Forth and the bridges. The train station is called Dalmeny for some reason though!

It really is a stunning city, and it never fails to amaze me even though I've lived hear for 2 years
