Where will the next big multi billion $ internet phenomenon emerge from?

Will facebook carry on being so popular if it required a monthly sub?

No. I don't think that will ever happen.

I don't know where the next one is coming from but as soon as the Facebook IPO lands i'm sure as hell buying some shares.

I'm not. I think the IPO will be the biggest risk to Facebook's success. When Zuckerberg leaves things could start to go wrong.

I think those that buy the shares will want a return, a sub is coming

That's not the way they will get a return. Facebook make most of their money from advertising. Advertising sales of $1.86bn last year and constantly growing. There is other revenue as well. I really don't think they will ever charge users and if they do it will fail.

I think I have it, but I don't know squat about web design so I could never make it, and im scared Il get Winklevoss'd. I'm not kidding either I honestly think I have it. It so fricking simple it scary.

Lrn2WebDesign? :p

Never understood the appeal of facebook tbh.

The best ideas are definitely the simplest though.

I'd love to get Winklevoss'd! They did nothing and made millions.

But i reckon if EA can combine the sim's into a WoW style mmo game they could probably buy their own country by the end of the year :p

They tried and it failed big time

They also tried to copy wow and failed big time

Heck they have got so desperate now they are even ripping off evony

Safe to say the next big multi billion $ internet phenomenon wont emerge from ea ;)

Encryption/protection.

When people start realizing en masse that putting all their personal details and actions on the internet might not be the best idea.

Though the 'celeb-status-facebook-tweetin' feeling might be too strong an urge to fight off...

I think more of a EA Sims mmo will fail, Look at Second life. that become just one big egeek porn fest. Anything like that will come to teh same, they have tried to make it into wow, but blizzard stopped it happening.

I think it could def be something porn/dating related.

I predict a huge backlash against Facetardbook and the like, people are waking up to Privacy issues and how it's becoming more and more important to keep your personal information secure. I'm surprised it has gone on as long as it has, all you ever see is people whining about it, don't like the new changes etc. Even better are the idiots that use it complaining about the other idiots that use it. The sooner it all implodes into its own inanity the better.

I hear adverts on the radio all the time for a service like that where they clean up your online footprint or something. I doubt many people use it though, most people don't care or don't understand.

This is the way im thinking, ...

Everyone wants to talk to each other (facebook),

Everyone wants to search the internet (google),

Everyone wants to watch and share videos (youtube),

Everyone wants to buy at cheaper prices (e-tailers, one in particular who is a top 3 internet multi billionaire)

These are all 'the bleedin' obvious' type of ideas, the most simple concepts that make massive amounts of money. Most brilliant ideas in life are always the simplest.

So... Everyone wants to ..... ? There has to be something else that everyone wants to do, something potentially untapped, something really simple and obvious, just like facebook, google and youtube are simple and obvious.

Maybe 3D will be it in some form, or maybe one day there'll be virtual touch with some sort of internet glove. If a site became a hub for all things virtual and touchy like youtube is the hub for all things video, it would attract billions in revenue from advertising :p

None of these things were "invented" by any of the example companies you have listed. They were all the result of part business, part luck, part right place right time.

Brings back some memories....

Excite was bought by a broadband provider named @Home in January, 1999 for $6.5 billion, and was named Excite@Home. In October, 2001 Excite@Home filed for bankruptcy. InfoSpace bought Excite from bankruptcy court for $10 million.

I know someone who made $millions by hiring some third rate chinese programmers to make him a program for a few hundred $ that generates hiphop beats or some rubbish, anyway it is extremely **** software. Then he marketed the HELL out of it to black people lol, and started an affiliate marketing scheme as well. Imagine the worst 90s shareware piece of **** software, then imagine selling it for $60 a copy to tens of thousands of people.

It's not billions but it's not hard to make millions as an individual. What he did is borderline fraud though IMO. It's all about the marketing. There is tons of people copying his idea now. e.g. www.beatthang.com

I predict the next big internet thing will be some sort of dating website.

Increased internet access and poeple leading more isolated lives means a dating site on the internet is the next logical step;)
