Got a gym partner? I love a bit of friendly competition.

I agree... If you train with someone then you are less likely to skip the gym seeing as your training partner will be expecting you to go. Also gives you someone to compete with.

Alternatively if you've been training for 4 years then maybe you just need a few weeks off to recharge

Like Crazy Fool, I would opt for music to give you the boost. Check out the new dongle that Nike are doing for the Ipod. Might be interesting!

First off, what are you doing in the gym? Are you bodybuilding? Just trying to keep fitness levels up? Battling the flab?...

How's your diet?
Is your routine structured?
Are you possibly over-trained? Losing motivation is a classic sign of being over-trained.

Yeah you can get the trainers with the slots for the kit, but some people just stick them in the side of any old pair of trainers & it seems to work.

I bought my Nike+ kit today to see if it will motivate me to go out running. I haven't got any Nike+ trainers though so I thought I might just make a little pouch for it and slide it under my laces then stitch it in place.

Why do you find yourself lacking motivation?

Not sure, I thought it was boredom so tried changing things; that did not work. So then I tried having a break, that did not work..I just can't see what is up with me.

Initially battling the flab, then it was developing muscle and just maintaining what I have.

My diet was good before just 3 times a day or light snacks all day (healthy stuff).
I used to have a routine structure of 4-5 times a week.
I usually overtrain a lot over the last few years, it's the only way I like it..mind you I might be mistaking that with just training hard!

Right now I probably do once or twice a week going to the gym, my diet is slowly becoming crap as well.

I won't let myself completly go, no way. Just that I go there and feel nothing, then I feel bad because I have spent so much time and money (which I will never get back) and im just wasting it by not taking full advantage.

About 3 weeks of feeling like this now!!

Seems to work ok. I measured a route on Google Maps as being 5.5k and it was only about 60m out by the time I had arrived there so it seems pretty accurate.

What I did with my shoes was I slit a hole in the tongue and pushed the sensor down inside so that it was right at the bottom of the tongue, logo side facing up. I don't really notice that it's in there at all and it communicates well with the receiver on the iPod.

So far I'm really liking using this kit. I've not been out running for about eight or nine years and I'm pretty unfit in general (5'11, 14 stones 3 pounds) but I'm finding myself actually wanting to go out and have a run every day. I'm not actually going out every day, more like every other day at the moment but I want to build myself up to it. So far I've done one 5.5k run and two 3.5k runs. Not managing to actually jog/run all the way, I'm probably running for 90 seconds and then walking for 60 seconds but the best thing is I can see my times are improving already by seeing my stats on the Nike+ website. So that's all the more motivational. On top of that, my twin brother down in Plymouth recently got the Nike+ kit (including trainers) and once I have been running for a few weeks so I am a bit closer to his level of fitness we can have challenges with each other, distance covered, first to 100k etc.

Recommended to anybody wanting to get fit but struggling for motivation. Mine cost me £99 for the iPod Nano and £20 for the receiver from John Lewis.

Yea i've been there, after going for so long this tends to happen, but you do come out of it again. Like the guys said buy something that will motivate you to go back. It always annoys me when I see someone at the gym who used to be far behind me in build catch up. That always gets me motivated again lol!

Maybe you should take a week off. Don't go anywhere near a gym. This will do two things:

1. Rule out the fact you could be over-trained and allow your body/joints time to recover.
2. Give to time to get refreshed mentally aswell as physically and hopefully come back with some renewed vigour.

Also maybe you should look at your routine and try something new. I constantly change my routine every 3/4 months. Sometimes a bit more/ less. I go high reps, low reps, lightweight/ heavy. Push/pull/legs routines to HST full body workouts. Are you just doing the same thing?

Alarm bells start ringing when I hear things like "just maintaining what I have" that just says to me, I'm using less effort and don't need or want to push myself. There's always something to improve, cycle your workouts:

Example:
6-8 weeks - Bodybuilding, gaining muscle mass
6-8 weeks - Cutting, burning bodyfat
6-8 weeks - Fitness, build up your cardiovascular system
