Ive just jumped on the opteron bandwagon and purchased an oem opty 146
my system spec is in my sig so ill need a new mobo and hsf just to try it out
i need a mobo that supports agp and id like to get to be able to hit 250+fsb on the mobo
im thinking of an asrock dual for the pci-e slot
any advice?
ps as low a price point as possible with as big an fsb oc as poss :)

Got an Asrock Dual here and its a great board. Last i heard it could only do 2.7GHz with the BIOS that comes with the board, but flash it to the latest BIOS adn it will go above and beyond that.

I've just bought this motherboard.. but i dont have a CPU :p We're in opposite situations...

However i should be buying a 3700SD end of this month :)

The ArSock dual is good value for money and represents an upgrade to PCI-e graphics, but to make the most of the 146 I would suggest a MSI K8N Neo2 Plat. or DFI NF3 Ultra as they have a lot more settings in the BIOS to aid Overclocking; the DFI will be expensive even used. I have had 3 used Neo2s and all have done 300+ HTT and were about the same price as the ArSock.

My 146 is in a Neo2; my ArSock dual just wasn't as good.

Hope this helps

I like 1.8; thats what I'm using for the 146 and an A64 3000.

NB my Opty only does 2.9 (290 x 10); but I got the 3000 to 308 x 9 in one board and with another 3000, 300 x 9 in the others.

I have an Asrock but I couldn't be bothered to do the volt mod so I got a second hand DFI NF3 Ultra-D and got an extra 200 Mhz out of both my Opteron 146 & 148. :)

i like the idea of a dfi board but they are hard to come by for less than 50 quid unfortunately which is about my budget at the moment

I have both the Asrock & the Neo2.

Asrock is a little finnicky in it's setup, but is cheap and offers an upgrade path (Which I took)

MSI is a very good clocking board... still playing round with it and a SD 3700....

ive just managed to get an msi k8n neo 2 for 32 quid inc
should hopefully arrive tues or wed
what bios will i need for it to boot with an opty?
and what are my options if it comes with an older nios
thanks

Boot with an older, supported chip, long enough to flash it. Borrow one off a mate for (Literally) 2 minutes.

or, send it to someone with a Neo2 themselves, and get them to hot-flash it for you.

You can also buy BIOS chips somewhere, google for it, as I can't remember it off the top of my head.

Just download the Latest BIOS off MSI's site to get going.

thanks for the quick reply
ill keep my fingers crossed that it comes with a bios that will let me boot unfortunatly i dont know anyone with a socket 939 cpu
newest cpu from peeps i know is an AMD 3200+ but its socket 754 :(

know all i need is a good cooler

my case aint great, rear, side and top 80mm fans, no front intakes sadly and case temps hit about 38 max in summer

i dont have a huge amount of room above the cpu ( from a side on view of the case ) so would the artic cooling be the best solution as equally, im on a budget
