Basically my old corsa is on its way out (not a bad thing i guess, excuse to get something decent) so im looking at the following kind of cars:

Vectra, Avensis, Mazda6, Passat, Bora & Mondeo. Basically my budget is around £5.5k max, i'm after something thats happy on the motorway a lot but can still potter around town easy enough, comfortable, lots of room for friends & band gear (big boot), luxuries would be nice, diesel=bonus & 0-60 in under 10 seconds. Anything more i should add?

Out of the ones i've listed it seems the Mazda6 or the Mondeo are the best bet judging by the opinions on this board?

Oh and im almost 21, 3NCB so insurance is relatively ok on most of these, around the £1k mark for the decent spec models.

thats quite specific, pros and cons? features/benefits? you know the drill, convince me :)

Mondeo is supposed to be the best in this class (i'm hardly the authority on this though, best to ask fox tbh ;)), is diesel, and I say the 130ps because the 115ps won't do 60 in under 10s.

Personally i'd be keeping is jap and buying an accord type R, but i'm nuts...

is it just me or am i searching for the wrong thing? i cant find any of those on autotrader but i can find 130bhp ones, just not this 130ps you speak of...or are those the same thing?

Considered an Octavia or Volvo V70? Not sure how their diesels line up, but both are regarded as pretty reliable. You might even get a half-decent Audi A6 for that price.

Yeah, PS = HP (well, close enough that it makes no odds)

ahh right cheers

ive looked at many volvo's but it seems i can get a better spec'd car elsewhere for the same price, not looked at the skoda's, what spec we looking at for my money? same with the A6?

Go for the Mondeo.

Do not go for a 5 Series - it is a considerably better car than anything you've listed but comes at a price - higher running costs, higher repair costs and more likely to go wrong. For many, it's a price well worth paying, but given the cars you've listed and the fact you've not asked about one I suspect the benefits of a 5 Series would not justify the expense over the cars you are asking about.

Couldn't say for sure as I've not had to buy either for quite a while ;). A quick browse at PH or the likes should help, and don't be too put off by the mileage as long as they have a good service history - for example my old man's A6 has done over 250K miles and is showing no signs of giving up.

I needed a car in a hurry earlier this year and bought a Mondeo TDDi. 110bhp and good enough. If I had more time to shop about I would have went for a TDCi but my A4 went pop and a mate was selling his Mondeo at the time.

The only real negatives I have heard about Mondeo's are potential problems with clutches and flywheels.
