No idea whats best nowadays, see sig for what ive got, fancy upgrading my mobo, and then when the new chips come out next year i want one that will be able to support these

Any recommendations ?

x38 for dual ATI cards using 2x 16x PCI-E and p35 for 16x and 4x but both are normally recommended. more p35. goods one seems to be Gigabyte P35 DS3R or IP35-E and both will support the new chips 45nm.

avoid Nforce, they have probs with the new Intel CPUs, so its a bad time to be an Intel/SLI fan.

P35 for non crossfire configs, X38 for crossfire configs. A bit like P965 vs 975X, just the OCing is pretty similar between P35/X38 and both have a good range of features like lots of SATA ports ect (depending upon the model within the chipset family you chose).

Ocing is pretty same-same.... both my old P35 and my new X38 could/can hit high 400s (485+) on very low NB volts.... managed to boot on 500FSB on my X38, with problems, but thats a CPU limitation not a MB one.

I wouldn't bother with X38 right now....I am having a mare...stick to P35 would be my advice.

Same here although i think it's a memory conflict. Saying that, it does'nt like my Geil or the Corsiar XMS from my other rig. At the moment i have an expensive door stop. :(

meh, no probs with my Crucial in my P5E

I have just ordered some Crucial Ballistix PC2 8500 direct from Crucial. At least that stuff is guaranteed to work with the P5E.

Nice clock by the way with that 6400. Nice timings too. Is'nt that 10th anni stuff pc 5300? If so that's very good going.

I think mine is a Vista Ultimate 64 bit thing...not unlocking my PCI-Express bus correctly with nvidia drivers ?

X38 had started off with little trouble, but I can either have a stable system at stock, but poor graphics performance (7593 3d06 score) or have one that doesn't work with the newer nvidia drivers.

As you say, lots of money spent and its next to useless.

Even with only one stick in it took me three days to get XP installed and now i have loads of problems installing the drivers. USB is dead once into windows, which does'nt help as there's only a ps2 keyboard slot. Hoping the Ballistix will sort things out. If not this things going back.

Yup..... on air its not too bad, good enough for me to be very tempted not to bother with Penryn at all. Not running that atm as i'm playing with FSB to see if i can break through my FSB wall, but the RAM is pretty sweet, doing that on stock volts too, so with a boost it might manage CAS 3 at 1000Mhz+

Can even hit 600Mhz 5-5-5-15 2.15V :D

Great stuff, my second set died recently, just waiting to get around to RMAing it.....Luckily it was the slower set though.

compared to that I have had it easy then....its just my Graphics system is running at around 50% of its potential....not sure if its Vista 64bit doing the dirty.

I am running 4 Gig [well, removed 2 gig for problem solving issues) of the Ballistix 8500 and it seems rock solid as memory goes. Got mine direct too
Although my board looses its Bios settings if you turn the power off at the wall  jeez !

Cheers for that. At least i know the Ballistix will be ok then. Another stupid thing about this board is that the bios it ships with, 107, does'nt support quads. It's a chipset that has only just come out for crying out loud. When the Ballistix arrive i am going to start all over and re-install XP again. Too many issues to try to sort out else. I will get to see what this rig can do one day.

Is your cmos battery ok? Have you tried updating the bios in case that problem's been fixed?

Yup, no "chesksum error" messages or anythig its just a quirk...hopefully sorted next bios update.
I am running the very latest beta bios too....the world waits with baited breath for the next one !:p

sorry to butt in on your thread but Im in a similar situation trying to decide between a p35 & x38. Ive read a few threads that slate the x38 chipset, then again Ive also read threads that are very positive.

Im not interested in crossfire so wondered what extra features the x38 offers other than that. I will want to push my Q6600 as much as possible (on air) so just wondered if anyone can suggest a decent board - I dont mind spending a bit if it will be worth it.. ;)

i'd like to move away from the 680i chipset all together (constant problems).
im also trying to decide between the p35 and x38 any recommendations would be greatly welcome

Is that a dual 16x slot P35 board? I thought only the x38 had that? I am very interested in that if so.
lots of P35 mobos have 2 physical x16 PCI-E slots but usually the 2nd only runs at x4 electrically (Asus Blitz does dual x8 but you can buy an X38 for less).

From the MSI website:

MSI P35 Neo2-FR

"Two PCI Express 16X slots with 1x16 and 1x4 operations (PCI Express Bus SPEC V1.0a compliant; supports CrossFire Technology)"
