Which display/screen for a 1070 GTX laptop?

Hey guys, I've been patiently waiting for the new GPU laptops to surface and I'm in a real pickle on what new laptop to buy.

I have around £2k to spend, I can push a little bit higher for the perfect one.

I have my spec'd locked down, it's just the display I'm struggling with.

1080p or 4k? or maybe even 3k? Should I be looking at a 120hz display?

I'm looking at a 15.6" laptop and it seems I have all above options available, I just don't know what to plump for. I would rather get a 3/4k display and drop the res down if needed than get a 1080p display and be stuck with it

Anyone have any experiences with different displays?

My personal experience with the XPS 13 and Surface Book, both of which run much higher than 1080p, is that unless you have a large screen to go with it you end up just bumping the display scaling, making the higher resolution kind of pointless.
If you're looking at anything less than a 17 inch display then I'd say you're probably better off staying 1080p.

Everyone's taste is different, but I would rather have a decent FHD 1080p G-Sync panel in a laptop than UHD.

As for GPU, all depends on usage I guess.
If you're at FHD 1080p and have no plans to use say a 1440p or 4k monitor for gaming then a GTX 1080 is probably overkill, heck even a 1070 might be slightly overkill too.

My limited understanding is that a GTX 1060 beats a GTX 970, which is a beast at 1080p.

And the 1060 beats a desktop 980

Bear in mind you think a bit longer term with a notebook typically. The 1070 is a very strong 70 series this gen (with a price to match) and will be a sweet spot for a lot of people.

The 1080 os for those who want to drop the serious cash.

I'd agree. As I have a Dell 1440p 144hz G-Sync monitor on my desktop, I'd probably go for something with a GTX 1070. It'll last a bit longer than a GTX 1060 and when I wanted to do some desktop gaming it'll have the extra grunt needed to drive 1440p (not that a 1060 will struggle really).

I'm thinking 1070 will be the sweet spot mainly due to the higher thermals pascal laptops will running.

1070 is going to in the TDP range of my current 980m in my AW17 laptop and I certainly don't wan ago hotter and heavier.

That's why I'm going to await the Alienware range at the PAX unveiling at the end of the month, in the hope they will keep graphics amp option.

As for screen res that's the biggest problem my Aw17 is 4K and I should have gone for the 1080, this time round I'm thinking high refresh 1080p is the one at 17" ....... But allure of 4K? :D

Good to see where we're at in a month when real users start getting theirs and all the models are out ?

Thanks for the replies guys, really good info here. The last GPU I had was a 780 GTX so I need to read up on G-SYNC. would i still need to look at a 120hz panel if it has G-SYNC?

There seems to be more options for 120hz on the 1060 than anything else.

As said already, there's no point in going 4k on a small screen - there's barely any benefit so best to go with a 1080p screen with G-Sync and, even better, buying a nice large 4K screen to properly take advantage of the 1070's pixel-pushing power and making all of your mates jealous.
