Which flavour gtx 480 or 6950

the faff is as difficult as overclocking in AB but a 480 doesn't always beat the 6970 at least not at higher resolutions. You can look at benchmarks yourself - they are even.

Also when I posted that the 480 was 208 not 195 :)

A card needs to be flashed, a warranty invalidated. I've read some mixed things about the 6950 flashing.

I'm not going to get into some sort of debate but at 1920x1200 the 480 seemed to beat the 6970 in a lot of scenarios, it is a case of swings and roundabouts though. The 6950 oc'd is good value

Personally Tom I've gone for the 6950 to replace my 5770 Crossfire. I will flash it to a '70 but it can be flashed back should it need RMAing.

For me the power draw and heat is just too much for the 480. I did come close to buying one though!

The warranty bit is easily avoided by switching the BIOS switch. That is why the card comes with 2 bioses. It is really as easy as that.

Regarding flashing and shaders, you have seen no problems because there aren't any. Of course not all cards will do silly clocks, as overclocking is not guaranteed but I haven't seen any cards not hitting stock 6970 clocks at least, many do 920-950 and some even do more. Flashing to a 5970 bios is different and there have been a few (but not that many) issues reported... many of them were specific to one game which proved to be a game problem more than anything but I admit it complies a slightly bigger risk, but probably not bigger than overvolting you card!!!

At 1920x1200 the results are mixed. nVidia cards win at HawX 2 and Dirt 2. AMD cards win at AVP and Crysis. No surprises there.

A few benchmarks for you...

I am not saying one or the other is better, I think they are about even and at the same price either will be a good choice :)

Why faff on when you can get a 480 for £195 no need to flash and it will beat the 6970.

This is what finally convinced me to choose the 480. I won't be gaming all the time and the idle power consumption isn't too bad really. Can't wait for the postie to arrive next week. :D

Can anyone tell me what power connectors are required for a 480 please and what the approximate powerdraw is?

I know the 6950 is only 2 x 6pin connectors and are max 250W, typical 190W as this info in in the descriptions of the cards, but there is nothing for the 480's in their description.

Also, whats the length of the 480 too? I think the 6950 is approx 275mm long.

In my case, it will come down to if I have the space to fit one and not the other I think, or if the 480 needs an 8pin connector as I only have 2 x 6pins.

I went for the 6950 cause of the 2560 resolution I play at

I also don't like nvidia but would have chosen the 6950 regardless.. To me the games which demand the most from a gpu like crisis and metro are the ones which do better with the 6950
