Hello, sorry for another boaring thread. I was wodnering, which headset would be the best for gaming and some music now and again. I ain't intrested in the hr595's etc.... just the two I am intrested in.

I am stuck with the following;
Roccat Kave 5.1 - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=SP-000-RC&groupid=702&catid=1058&subcat=
Razer Carcharias - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=SP-007-RA&groupid=702&catid=1058&subcat=

I am a bit stuck on which to chose.

Any help please???

What sound device do you use?

Razer Carcharias if you have something like a X-Fi or Xonar. If you have just plain onboard with no Dolby Headphone, maybe the Roccat, as the Razer without either Dolby Headphone or CMSS 3D, will just be plain stereo.

X-Fi Gamer or Xonar DX/D1 plus Razer Carcharias would get my vote over any 5.1 set.

Carcharias then imo. CMSS 3D is very good at creating a 3D sound imagine with stereo headphones, especially over ear ones. I am not convinced at all by these 5.1 headphones. I know many reviews say how great these things are, but there are plenty of reviews that gave the Speedlink Medusa's full marks, yet there are people on this forum who have owned those and said they are a load of tripe. Admittedly the Roccat's do use analogue connection, which at least takes advantage of the sound card, unlike USB sets.

Another factor is, that you said you would like to use them for a bit of music too. The Carcharias have been compared to the HD555 for audio quality, so that is one reason to go for the Razer's. You have a good sound card with CMSS 3D, which does a very good job of creating a 3D sound image for gaming. Personally I see no reason to go for the Roccat's. 5.1 headphones for music? Bah!

So you are looking at headsets that use analogue, that take advantage of the sound card? Did you get the Logitech's before you got the sound card?

Get the Rocatt Kave, and use real 5.1 instead of using CMSS 3D , why would you want to create 5.1 when you can actually use real 5.1 with the Roccat kave headset

Sorry but, lol. Real 5.1? Get out of here, no 5.1 headset is true 5.1. Someone posted a good reply to how surround sound works, and no amount of drivers placed in a set of phones will sound like true 5.1.

lol all you want, dont knock it till you've tried it, the Roccat kave headset has a total of 6x40mm speakers:eek:

I've just come from a set of 5.1 medusas to the Razer Carcharias and they are simply better in every way. Sound quality for music is leagues ahead and much to my surprise so is the positional audio. Despite what some people seem to think (myself included before getting these) it seems that CMSS-3D really is better for positional effects than simply sticking more drivers near your ears.

Why aren't you interested in the 595's?

The 555's will sound better than both of them headsets.

But it's your money eh.

More drivers crammed into a pair of headphones is better, right?

Nice how they are marketed at having a centre driver/speaker. Does this centre speaker come separately to the phones, that must be placed in front of the user? Of course it doesn't, so how can they claim there is a centre speaker. That's what bugs me about these things, 5.1 is a lie. Real 5.1? Simulated yes, real no. Phones that use multiple drivers are no more real than stereo phones used with CMSS 3D or Dolby Headphone.

I find it amazing how many people fall for this 5.1 headphones nonsense. Multiple drivers can do no better job than 2. These multiple drivers are still sat right outside your ears, so the sound is not coming from the front or back. 2 drivers, 1 left, 1 right are needed to create the effect of a centre speaker, which is simulated, not real.

When CMSS 3D and Dolby Headphone are applied correctly, the effect is very realistic, which makes multiple driver 5.1 headphones rather pointless.

Something else to consider. If you take 5.1 phones and stereo phones both costing the same, one has 6 drivers, the other has 2. Tell me, which will have the better quality drivers?

Actually they don't, the Carcharias are actually surprisingly decent. They've been compared as on par with the 555s, and they're somewhere in between the Goldring DR100 and DR150 (my own comparison). The money seems to have gone into some halfway decent drivers, and a mic, rather than on flash and gimicks.

Most musical headset I've heard.

They're not worth more than about £60, but at £60, same cost as the HD555s, they fit in fine.

Good news, picked up my razer today and what a headset. Everything is spot on. Get my xifi platnium sound card tmorrow so will try the CMD3d thing out. Thanks all :D

I do not know how but they actually do it

I do not now how do they do it but I can confirm that you can hear the sound in front, left, right, and behind of you with the Roccat Kave because I own one of this piece and actually tested it. However do not misunderstand me this headset is not perfect. It actually has a lot of disadvantages like its big weight, it does not cancel noise as it claims and it bass its moderately low.

Well I own a bugatti Veyron and as I own one I can confirm it is amazing, but does have its faults.
