here are some good tools.
mkv2vob 2.4 - converts mkvs into a PS3 media file. Once converted. Copy onto PS3 hard drive and play in full quality!
http://ps3mediaserver.blogspot.com/ - PS3 Media server. Both of which i've used before. For your SD needs use this to work with your PS3. It will treat it as a media server. Navigate to your DIVX or MP4 files and it will convert it on the Fly. Works really well.

Another vote for PS3 Media Server, i use it to stream 1080p x264 over ethernet no problems

I use Tversity which transcodes on the fly. Although I use it over wifi - the odd HD file I stream works perfectly
