Which is the best?

I gather you mean visually smoother due to the super amoled?

Personally I was in two minds about the Galaxy S before the DHD came along, it's a little plasticy and I'm not a fan of the design, it is lighter and thinner than the DHD albeit by a small amount and of course has the super amoled screen with better colours and blacks.

The desire HD is built very sturdily with the aluminium body it feels great, the screen size is definitely a great bonus too and the SLCD is good for browsing and general use.

So physically you've got a slightly bigger and heavier phone with the DHD but the screen is bigger and it feels so much nicer to hold. DHD also has a lot of extra sense features built in.

Both devices now have 2.2 and with it quadrant benchmarks them both similarly overall but the benchmark breakdown is quite telling, different strengths on both devices:

Both have excellent onboard space for apps too, I don't think you'll ever run out. Personally I think with 2.2 both devices are very powerful and capable, I think the main thing that will make you choose is to hold them both in your hand and get a feel for how they are in the hand and how you like one or the other screen too.

Personally I picked the Desire HD, all round I think it's more powerful in the right places, I love the aluminium case and overall design, not to mention the huge screen is great.

Didn't realise how badly the SGS file system was. That I/O score is shocking compared to the DHD. Though I'm guessing that SGS in the 2nd screenshot has the lag fix, which isn't a good representation of how the phone is out of the box.

We bought both for work and I had them for a weekend. Bit of an odd one as the samsung screen is more vibrant, but the Desire HD's screen is bigger and the pixel density seems higher.

Both screens have the same resolution, so pixel density will be higher on the SGS purely based on the smaller screen size.

AMOLED has more vibrant colour and deeper blacks, but SLCD gives a crisper display, bit like plasma vs lcd tvs. Each has their own pros and cons.

As for my vote, DHD.

Samsung Galaxy S for me.

front facing camera and a battery that is not totally gimped.

Although I do think the HTC Desire HD is better built and a bit heavier which I prefer.

But I am a bit of a specs whore and the Samsung Galaxy build quality isn't bad, just not good.

Where do you work?

Its not a technology reviewer or anything like that, but we do develop apps for both android and Apple markets. The team i'm in need handsets and have been given a free reign for what they want, for usage and evaluation purposes.

It's doesn't exactly happen every month.

Aye, I suspected it wasn't actually the case hence the "seems". I think it's how the pixels are separated. If you look closely at the AMOLED screen you can more easily see the division between pixels.

Unfortunately having an iPhone 4 makes you a bit of a display snob once you become accustomed to the pixel density.

What exactly are the benefits of front-facing cameras? Video calling was attempted years ago and failed, we don't want it, and no amount of Apple marketing it's face-time feature will change this.

The battery in the DesireHD is smaller than the one in the old Desire yet the HD uses more juice which is not a good idea imho.

Having a front facing camera that isn't used at the moment is called future proofing.
I personally don't use Skype but a lot of people do so there is a market.

I bet any money the next HTC phone will have a much bigger battery and a front camera. Seems like they rushed it or something to me.

Either way they will both be old hat on a months time when the LG Star hits.

Front facing cameras have been tried and have been mostly ditched. Doesn't seem like future proofing to me, rather wishful thinking from someone with a front facing camera.

Also, LG won't make the rest obsolete as they are as cheap and nasty as the SGS.

EDIT: are you saying that you think the vanilla Desire, Mozart and DesireZ have all been rushed too as they don't have front facing cameras? Hmm...
